Review Introduction:

Damn.... what can I say about this game? To say that I am (for once) truly lost for words would be an understatement. Why oh why was this game made, let alone released? Before I start this review, let me just say that I had much more fun playing The Legend of Success Joe, than playing this trash. If you know about that particular game, then you might get some idea of how horrible this game is (if not, then see the review of LOSJ).

Gameplay:

I have to be honest and say that I didn't have any hopes at all for this game, even before I played it. Power Spikes 2 is a Volleyball game, and is also another game that tried to jump onto the "Futuristic sports" bandwagon. Unfortunately, when it tried to jump onto the bandwagon, it fell right back off and landed straight on its head! Sarcasm aside, although the futuristic setting was great in games like The Bitmap Brothers classic Speedball 2 (on Amiga), it does about as much for this game as it did in 2020 Baseball.

You can actually choose between either futuristic volleyball (where the players are mixed sex and all have armor etc) or standard male or female volleyball. However it makes no real difference to the gameplay, other than the addition of an energy bar which depletes every time you miss the ball (instead of it being based on points... wow), and also the addition of a super meter which lets you hit the ball really powerfully. The power moves are actually pretty cheap, so you may as well stick to the normal game.

After selecting your team, it is on to the gameplay itself, although some people might argue that there is no such thing as "gameplay" here. You control only one person on your team, although sometimes you do get control of the other players. This is a side view volleyball game, so all you need to do is move left and right to line yourself up with the ball, and then hit your button to return it. To win, you need to set your other plays up so that they can jump up and smash the ball down into the other side of the court. What this means is that you generally end up just tapping the A button a couple of times and hoping for the best, which gets boring very quickly.

Graphics & Sound:

Powerspikes isn't helped by some of the most awful graphics ever to grace SNK's machine. The players move like they have chronic arthritis and they all look exactly the same too. The first thing that I thought when I saw it was "Hey, did I hook up my NES to the TV instead of the Neo Geo?". In fact, I think I have actually saw similar games on the NES which looked and played far better than this. I won't bother wasting another paragraph on the sound either, as it is just as bad and consists of a few adequate sound effects and speech, and some monotonous and instantly forgettable music.

Overall:

As I write this final part of the review, I am looking at Power Spikes 2, and trying to decide if it really is all that bad. Unfortunately, it really is. Why Video System why? Didn't anyone in your play testing department actually turn around at any point and say "Er, guys... this gameplay sucks!"? I could live with bad graphics if the gameplay had at least a few redeeming values, but nothing saves this game from the fiery pits of Neo Geo hell. Well, other than the fact that it might be a good remedy if you are suffering from insomnia; you could try playing it as I'm sure it will put you to sleep.

Having said that, if it does help you to sleep, you might get nightmares about it... You have been warned ;)
