Review Introduction:

Up until I got to play this game, I had only heard one or two things about it. I heard that it was quite a rare game and if you could actually find one of the original boards, it would probably be quite expensive! Anyway, I sat down to play it so I could write this review and I have to say that I can understand why this game is so rare... and that's not a good thing!

Gameplay:

I was expecting this to be a normal style football game, but was surprised when I found that it is actually based on five-a-side football (ahem, I mean “Soccer” for all you US people :). Because of that, the pitch is very small - probably less than half the size of a normal pitch. Obviously a normal sized field would have been too big for only five players on each team, but this actually seems too small for my liking at times. When you play against the CPU, you constantly seem to have no room at all to move about because once you receive the ball, you have to pass very quickly to a teammate so that you don't lose it. This makes for a very frustrating game play experience.

It is frustrating that Pleasure Goal doesn't appear to be very skilful either. In most cases, a match goes like this: You get the ball, you keep pressing “B” to pass it around a few times, then once you get close enough, just shoot and hope for the best. Usually, if you just run straight towards the goalkeeper and shoot, the ball rebounds off them and straight to one of your players, which means you can take an easy shot straight into the back of the net. The game play just feels very scrappy and it's like you never quite seem to be in total control. Suffice to say, after I had been playing this for about half an hour, I found myself very bored!

Graphics:

When you first see this game, you will probably laugh a little at the graphics too. They are not the worst on this system (not by a long shot), but the players all seem to run around the pitch like they are injured or something! There are more frames of animation on the characters than in some other games, but the way they run around looks more than a little bit strange! There are a few nice touches though, like the fact that there are different stadiums to play in. The place that you play in doesn't just affect the graphics; it also alters the game play slightly. When you play on some pitches such as the gymnasium or downtown, the ball doesn't go out of play; it just bounces of the wall. OK, so I know it isn't much, but it does add a little bit of variety to an otherwise dull game.

Sound effects & Music:

Now for the sound: On the Neo Geo, there are some games where I would turn the sound volume up (example: KOF '98) and there are some where I would turn it down, (example: many of the Mahjong games). Unfortunately, Pleasure Goal fits snugly into the same category as the Mahjong games. The music really annoyed me in a few areas for some reason, so I just turned it down, or even off completely. The sound effects aren't too bad, although they just contain the usual elements you would expect in a football game. There are a few parts that sound a little silly though, such as the commentator saying “Nice shoot” when you score sometimes… looks like “SNK-Engrish” has made its way into sports games too!

Overall:

I have heard quite a few people say that they liked this game a lot. I remember reading Chris Mullins comments in his Neo Geo FAQ, where he said that it could be “a lot of fun”, but on this occasion I really don't agree with Chris. To be fair, I played it against a friend in two-player mode for a while and found it more enjoyable than the single player mode (put the goalkeepers on “manual” mode to make things more entertaining!), but I guess it all comes down to personal taste really. If you hate football games, then without a doubt you should definitely steer clear of this, but if you like them and fancy playing something a little different then it might be worth a try. I for one however, will stick to the Super Sidekicks series for my Neo Geo football thrills.

Oh and just for the record: Pleasure Goal is a weird name… it sounds more like an “adult” game if you ask me! ;)
