Review Introduction:

When I first saw this game, I mistook it for "Neo Bomberman", which is another Neo Geo title and is the normal Bomberman style of game (running around a maze, dropping bombs to blow up enemies). Panic Bomber however is actually a puzzle game that plays basically the same as Columns in the arcade or on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis etc.

Gameplay:

The idea is to arrange the different Bomberman heads that drop down into lines of 3 or more of the same colour. The lines can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal. Each time that you make a line, they disappear and are replaced by bombs that appear at the bottom of the screen. Every so often a red bomb drops down that can be used to detonate those bombs. In addition to that, there is also a big bomb that you get every now and then which can be used to knock a large amount of objects off the screen. If any objects reach the top of the screen, it is game over.

Admittedly, this game plays like any other puzzle game out there, but that doesn't stop it from being fun. I quite enjoyed the “Bomberman” graphical style of the game too, as it is quite cool in my opinion. As usual with this type of game, it is much better fun if you play against a human opponent instead of the CPU. The first few rounds when playing the CPU are usually quite easy, but it gets very difficult very quickly though and can be quite frustrating at times.

Graphics:

As you can see from the screenshots above and as you would expect in most puzzle games, the graphics are fairly plain. Then again you don't really need them to be amazingly good and there is not a great deal that you can do with this type of game either. The main thing that I expect from a puzzler is for the graphics to be clear and easy to make out; Panic Bomber passes that test with ease.

Sound effects & Music:

If you have played any of the Bomberman games in the past, then you will probably recognise some of the music in this game, because some of it (like on the first stage) is remixed from the other games. For that reason, I quite liked it, as it immediately brings back memories of blowing the hell out of my friends on the Amiga and Super Nintendo games. The sound effects are pretty standard stuff though, just some cutesy speech and a few spot effects here and there.

Overall:

All in all, this is a decent game, it just depends on how much you like this sort of puzzle game. Personally I prefer Money Puzzle Exchanger and Magical Drop to Panic Bomber any day, but this is still worthwhile and can provide decent fun for a while. The Bomberman theme is definitely an added bonus for me though.

Neo Bomberman
The usual Bomberman style of game. It's great fun, but loses something in its Neo Geo incarnation - see the review for more info.

Magical Drop series
These are better puzzle games in my opinion and are definitely worthy of your attention!!!
