I remember back in the 16-bit SNES and Amiga days I used to love Bomberman. I had Hudson Soft's Dyna Blaster for the Amiga and I can remember on TV shows like Games World and Games Master (if you are in the UK you might remember those :) they used to use the SNES version Super Bomberman on many of their contestant challenges. For those who don't know (unlikely, as this game has been converted to almost every system imaginable including NES Gameboy, SNES, PSX), the object of this game is to blow up monsters/walls that are in your way. Once all of the monsters on a stage are destroyed, you move on to the next stage and every few stages you fight a boss character.

This version of Bomberman is very much like the PC Engine version, with similar levels/power ups. These power ups give you the ability to drop more than one bomb at a time, give you more powerful explosions and some let you kick bombs across the screen or pick them up and throw them over obstacles. On certain stages, you also find creatures that you can hitch a ride on once you have blown them up once. These have different abilities, like the blue bird (shown above), which flips bombs up into the air on its beak, which then land in a random place on the screen. Last of all, you sometimes come across other bomber characters that help you by dropping bombs across the stage for you. Well, actually they can be a bit annoying as they sometimes drop bombs in very inconvenient places that usually end with you dying!

Now, so far all this may sound a little dull... If so, that's because I am describing the one player mode and the one player mode is dull and boring after a while. The main thing that makes the Bomberman games stand out is the fantastic Multi-player mode! I am not exaggerating when I say that Bomberman has to be one of the most addictive/played/classic multi player games ever created! In this mode, there is only one aim: To blow the crap out of your friends/enemies. In fact, by the end of a long session of Bomber Man, any friends playing WILL be enemies! These games can just get so competitive, you can't help but scream at your opponents when you get beaten, or laugh out loud as they die!

Unfortunately, that is the reason why I don't like the Neo Geo version of Bomberman all that much... Don't get me wrong, the game itself plays fine and can be very good fun. The problem is with the Neo Geo system itself. The Neo Geo only has the ability to use two controllers, which means you can't have four player (or higher) games. Now, I know that Neo Bomberman is arcade only and there was not a home cartridge, so there may have been a four-player arcade machine. If anyone knows if there was, then let me know. Anyway, without a four-player mode, this game is not quite so good. While the one player quest mode is OK for a while and playing against one CPU opponent or better still, a human opponent in battle mode is still very cool, it is nothing compared to the thrill of playing 3 human opponents...

Graphics & Sound:

Graphically, this game is fine. It is all very cute and colourful and it suits the game well. Although there isn't anything special about the graphics, there isn't anything that I can criticise them for either… if you have seen the PC Engine version then you will have a good idea of what to expect. The sound consists of some familiar (for those have played Bomberman) music, which always makes me feel nostalgic when I hear it, and a few different sound effects. The squeaking noise that you make when you walk around gets very annoying after a while though.

Overall, this is a good game, but the lack of a true multi-player mode is very frustrating and means that it's not as good as it could/should have been. Maybe I am being very unfair because I am used to playing the multi player matches on the Amiga, SNES and Playstation, but I just don't find the one player quest mode keeps your interest for long enough. The one and two player battles can still be quite good fun, but if you haven't ever tried any of the Bomberman games in multi player, I suggest that you go try those now...

A Bomberman spin off, this is a puzzle game that is a lot like Columns on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis.
