Introduction:

I remember reading about this on a Neo Geo FAQ made by Chris Mullins, where he said "for those who want Pulstar, but can't find it". Personally I would say that this is “for people who want Pulstar but can't handle the Challenge”. This is really just another old shoot 'em up which doesn't bring anything drastically anything new to the genre, but still manages to be better than many of the other shooters on the Neo Geo.

Gameplay:

The controls are very simple as in most shoot 'em ups. The A button is used to shoot, and if you hold it down you can charge up and fire a little pod that accompanies your craft. If you hold down B the pod locks in one place so it that it doesn't move around when you do. Easy!

Graphics & Sound:

As far as Neo Geo graphics go, it is quite standard. The enemy craft aren't particularly varied and the bosses are not all that special either. Having said that, this is a whole three years older than Pulstar. Don't expect anything amazing, but at the same time, don't expect them to offend your eyes too much either. Sound effects and music also fall into the same category too, although I do like the music on the first stage.

Overall:

If you love shoot 'em ups, then you will probably enjoy this game but there are far better ones out there. As I mentioned, there are also much worse shooters available, so you could do much worse then to play The Last Resort. Take a look at the games mentioned below if you want to see the best games of this type on the Neo Geo, as this game is not your "Last Resort" (sorry for the pun!). I definitely recommend that fans of the genre give it a go to get their shoot ‘em up fix though.

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 6/10
Game play: 6/10
Replay Value: 6/10

Pulstar
If you need a strong challenge.

Blazing Star
More of a button masher than Pulstar, but great nonetheless!

It's not called The Last Resort, just Last Resort. Are you sure it's called Blazing Star in Japan? I thought Blazing Star was the sequel to Pulstar. Kind of funny if they named it after a Japanese game that already existed.

I played this game when it was released. It was pretty amazing, considering Andro Dunos was the only other side scrolling choice. You also had Alpha Mission II and Ghost Pilots the same year, and Viewpoint (which is in a league of it's own).

One of the things I loved about this game was the little extra touches, like the pilots jumping to their deaths when their ship is destroyed, and being able to shoot the cars driving by on stage 1.

I still play this from time to time on my AES. Two player coop is fun with the wife. I like trying to defend her. And as a long time fan of R-Type games, I'm a sucker for a shooter with a pod.

I remeber being incredibly frustrated by this game. I only got to the thrid or fourth stage trying my absolute hardest. I ended up breaking a controller over this game. I haven't played Last Resort since that day, nor do I plan on ever playing it again. It isn't necessarily a bad game, it is just way too difficult for my tastes. If you like this game, that's just fine with me. It's far from the worst game on the system.

Actually really love this game - music is really nice and controls are tight. The end bosses could be bigger and badder but this is still a great cart/
