Although I enjoyed the original King of the Monsters game I have to admit that it was fairly average. I was hoping that KOTM2 would be better, because I think that the setting for both games (huge monsters destroying cities) is quite cool. However, I didn't find this game to be much of an improvement over the original. In fact, I would probably say it was LESS enjoyable.

The idea of KOTM2 is basically the same as the original game, only this time you don't go straight into a fight with just one character, you have to battle your way through a small side scrolling section first. In the side scrolling sections, you fight some small mutants and also tanks and planes (like in the first game). Once you get past that part, then you fight the levels main character in a one on one fight. This time around you only get to pick from 3 different monsters, compared to the original games 6 monsters. This doesn't make much difference, because they are all about the same as each other anyway. You can still pick Super Geon (Godzilla look-a-like :) and also Atomic Guy (some weirdo superhero type) and also the character Cyber-Woo, who is an ape style robot. I am not sure if there are any other characters that are hidden, because I can't find an FAQ for this game anywhere. There are lots of different CPU characters to fight though, so maybe it is possible to choose them?

While most of what I have said so far may make the game sound like an improvement over KOTM, I personally feel that it plays worse. The side scrolling part at the start of each level isn't great and doesn't really add anything to the game. In fact I would rather just get straight into the fight itself most of the time. I think that the actual main fight scenes are not too great either. There are many minor changes, most of which I don't like.

In the first game, you had one energy bar, but in KOTM2 you have three lives as well. This may sound good, but unfortunately your life bar goes down VERY fast meaning that you lose lives quickly. The CPU opponents can be extremely difficult to beat at times, which makes things even worse. Also, to beat an opponent, you no longer have to pin them for three seconds wrestling style, they just die as soon as their energy reaches zero. Finally, the controls have changed slightly and are a little bit simpler. Overall, I think that the first King of the Monsters just felt better.

Graphics & Sound:

One thing of note is that the graphics are a step up from the original game. The characters are now bigger and look a lot more cartoony. It is still lots of fun to stamp on or pick up and throw buildings/cars etc. The animation is now a little better, although not too much and it's worth noting that the stages are now set across many different countries, instead of just Japanese cities. This adds a little bit more variety. As far as the audio goes, it is average, not fantastic, but passable for a Neo Geo game.

I've read reviews of this game before and some have said that it is better than KOTM. I guess its just a matter of opinion, but I felt a little let down with this game. Besides, neither of the games in this series are really all that great anyway, although they are quite old so you can forgive them for being dated. Like the first game, this is definitely more fun in two-player mode (you can still play the two people Vs CPU mode, which is fun), but even that is still only entertaining for a limited time.

I doubt that it will ever happen, but it would be nice if SNK made an updated King of the Monsters game, with lots of characters and obviously much improved game play. I think that would be great fun. Anyway, King of the Monsters 2 gets the following ratings:

Graphics: 7.5/10
Sound: 6/10
Game play: 6/10
Replay Value: 5/10

Overall Rating: 6/10

King of the Monsters
The original and a slightly better game in my opinion.
