Review:

At the time of writing this, I have just finished writing my reviews of Baseball Stars 1/2 and have finished a playing session of this game. The main difference with 2020 Super Baseball compared to the others in the series is that it is set in the future and the players are either wearing futuristic clothes or are replaced by robots. So what game play differences are there between this and the other two baseball games? Well, there aren't many to be honest…

Gameplay:

This game was actually made after Baseball Stars Pro, but before Baseball Stars 2. Apart from being made in between those two games, the quality of this game itself is somewhere in between. It plays better than the first game, but doesn't seem to be quite as good as BBS2 for some reason. There are only a few game play differences that I noticed. For instance, mines are laid across the field occasionally, which explode if a fielder steps on them. I didn't really see any other major game play differences of interest apart from that. Maybe I am missing something.

Graphics:

In the graphics department this game is of the same standard as the other baseball games on the Neo Geo, but with the obvious futuristic additions. There are some nice touches, such as when the robots get damaged, sparks fly off them and eventually they catch fire.

Sound effects & Music:

The sound is also much the same. It's exactly the same as the other BBS games for the most part, but the commentator is a robots voice instead. I still find the music very annoying too, so the audio department isn't 2020's strongest point..

Overall:

This game might not be worth bothering with if you have Baseball Stars 2. I like sports games with a futuristic setting (like Speed Ball 2 on the Amiga or Soccer Brawl for the Neo Geo) but this style doesn't really do anything for this particular game. Having said that, I'm not a baseball fan so it's hard for me to comment, and maybe a real fan would get something out of it, especially as the game is pretty cheap to buy. Overall though, I think that BBS2 plays better than this.
