Released by VISCO in 1999 on both home and MVS versions, GANRYU is an action/platform Ninja fighting-fest!

As either a man or a woman (two players can play alternately) you hack, slash, and jump your way through a maze of geography. Controls are solid. Slash, jump, shoot and swing, although sometimes you feel you don't have a fair shot at keeping up (a real quarter-pumper design). You find yourself constantly slapping at the A button trying to stay up with the constantly appearing Ninjas (just where do they come from ?).

The bosses are goofy. The boss in the first level is an oversized woman with half a body who spits fire and jumps up and down. When she is dispatched, a large mask falls from the sky and tries to bump you into oblivion. Not real inspiring stuff here. Maybe if I understood the background a little better it would be OK, but it just doesn't work for me.

Graphics & Sound:

The graphics have vivid color with a good resolution and some stages have nice lighting effects, but there is nothing ground-breaking here. The sound consists of repetitive flute music and death screams that sound like chicks peeping. These average sounds are fairly clear (a mixed blessing).

Overall I cannot really recommend this game especially because you will pay a premium for it not being readily available. Your money would be better invested in Garou, or Last Blade 2, or even Shock Troopers for that matter. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being great, I would give Ganryu a 5. Not a good score for a newer release, and not in the company of great Neo Geo games.

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 5/10
Game play: 5/10
Replay Value: 5/10

Overall Rating: 5/10
