Introduction:

This is another American sports game that SNK made in the early nineties; it seems like they liked to make them back then, as they released lots of Baseball games and also a basketball game. Before I start this review, I would like to say that I really don't know a great deal about American Football. In fact, I have never sat down and played an American Football game properly until I played this one, apart from John Madden Football on the Mega Drive, although that was a long time ago. This means that when trying to write a review of it, I feel the same way I did as when I reviewed the baseball games for the Neo Geo (not confident!). However, I will do my best…

Gameplay:

I'm not going to try to explain the rules of this game for the people that don't know, because my explanation would probably be laughable. I'll just try to give you an idea of how this game works instead. Obviously the rules have been simplified from the real thing because it is meant to be an arcade game and needs to be easy to just pick up and play. There are two parts to the game play, offence and defence. When you are defending, you just need to control your players to try to intercept the ball. When you are attacking, you need to choose what type of run or pass play you are going to do (see above screen shot) and then attempt to carry it out.

If you haven't played any games like this before, then you will probably think that the screen where you pick your attack looks confusing at first glance. However it is actually pretty simple. The diagrams just tell you where each player is going to run (I guess I'm sounding really dumb here). For instance, if you look at the screen shot above, there is a player running along the top of the screen labelled with the letter “D”. So, if you press the “D” button when play starts, you will pass to him. Obviously the same goes for all the other players that are labelled with different letters. It's as simple as that. You need to keep trying to advance as far as you can on each play before your opponents tackle you. When you get to the end of the field, you simply need to run over the line to automatically score a touchdown. Even though the game is very simple to play, I found it confusing at first because I know nothing about American football, but once I figured it out, I quite enjoyed playing a few matches on it.

Graphics & Sound:

This is certainly not the best sports game that you will see on the Neo Geo as far as the graphics are concerned, although it isn't terrible. They are fairly clear and there are quite often lots of players on screen at one time, however the ball can occasionally be a little difficult to see. The players aren't very well animated, but that doesn't really matter too much; the game is quite old and the cartridge fairly small anyway. In exactly the same way, the sound is not the best you will hear, but not the worst either. The sound effects are exactly what you would expect in a sports game like this (crowd cheering, etc.) and the music used is OK in some places, but can be a little annoying in others.

Overall:

I was quite surprised that I found myself playing this game as much as I did. After I figured out how to play it, it became fairly addictive, although that only lasted for a short time before I got bored. This is probably because it is so simple. If you played this game in two player mode however, it might be a lot more fun beating a human opponent than a CPU controlled one (it usually is!).

One thing: If you were playing this game in an arcade, then you would probably end up spending a lot of money to finish a match. The matches are made up of four quarters and at the end of each one I was asked to insert more money, even if I was winning. And after winning the match, it still asked me if I wanted to insert more coins to continue! If you were playing this at home then it wouldn't be a problem, but otherwise steer clear of it… unless you have a pocket full of money, or the arcade machine is set on free play!
