Introduction:

In the past, I have mentioned that there are some older games that I still like to play, but most other people wouldn't bother with. Games like The Art of Fighting and World Heroes are good examples of games that were good in their time but look extremely dated today. The reason that I still like them myself is because I used to play them a lot in the arcade when they were first released, and when I play them now, I get a great feeling of nostalgia and it brings back some happy memories. When other people who didn't have the benefit of playing these games a few years ago look at them however, they just dismiss them as being crap. While that might sound a little harsh, it holds true for me when I play this game...

Gameplay:

I did not have the benefit of playing this game in 1994 when it first came out. Before I played it, many people told me that the game was O.K. for its time, but that it looks terrible by today's standards. I decided to give it a try anyway, out of curiosity more than anything. After loading up the game, I was greeted with a very boring intro that didn't really make much sense… things were not looking good. After proceeding to pick my character who was a blatant rip-off of Ryu from Street Fighter (never mind, most 2D beat 'em ups have at least one “Ryu” style character), I got into a fight and things became worse. My opponent was Miyuki, who looked sort of like a cheap version of Mai from Fatal Fury (which annoyed me, because Mai is one of my favourite FF / KOF characters).

Anyway, I soon realised that this game was really wasn't very good. The controls just don't seem right and it can sometimes be very hard to pull out your special moves. The CPU also seems to like using the same move over and over. Miyuki for instance has a special move where she jumps up and starts scratching you, which would be annoying enough, but she uses it every five seconds which really got on my nerves. Other characters do the same thing too, which means that you have to resort to very cheap methods to win CPU fights. This means that the game gets very boring after a while because there is no skill involved whatsoever.

Graphics & Sound:

The graphics are not really any better either. The character design isn't particularly good and the animation on the whole, is non-existent. Most of the backgrounds also suffer from looking extremely flat and boring. They could have been done much better in my opinion. There isn't really a lot to be said about the sound either. Five minutes after you turn the game off, you will probably have forgotten how it sounded, that's how unmemorable it is. The music is passable, but the sound FX are quite plain and sound as if they were ripped from Art of Fighting 1. Very average indeed!

Overall:

Overall, Fight Fever is one of the worst fighting games on the Neo Geo; worse than Ragnagard! If you had the advantage of playing it a few years back, then you will probably like it more than I did, but if you haven't played it before then you probably won't want to bother. Then again, if I had played this on its release, I still don't think I would have liked it!

This was Viccoms only Neo Geo game I think, and it sure does show why they didn't make anymore! :)
