Introduction:

This is the fourth entry into the Fatal Fury series (FF Special was the third). Fatal Fury 3 is another of those games I never got the chance to play all that much back on it's original release, as I only saw it a couple of times in a local arcade, after that they replaced the machine with something else :(. Now I have the game, it's time to have a look at it:

Gameplay:

This game plays similarly to its predecessor FF Special, but with a few differences. There are now 3 planes of movement, unlike the previous games where there were 2. Pressing A + B together brings you closer to the screen, while B + C sends you to the rear of the screen. This time, all the fighting is done on the middle plane, you only step into the other 2 for a limited time and then jump back in to attack your opponent in the middle plane when you want to. I also noticed that when you beat an opponent, they sometimes fly into the background with different results depending on the stage; on one they land in the water, on another they fall off a lift and cling on by their fingertips among others. This is a very nice touch!

One thing that gave me a good laugh was the comments that the fighters made before and after each fight, which are different depending on who you are fighting against/with. Comments such as "Yes! Full contact with Mai Shiranui, my life is now complete!" when Bob Wilson fights Mai. All of these comments are very cheesy and are written in typical "SNK-Engrish" style language, which is quite hilarious.

Graphics & Sound:

Like the other Fatal Fury games it is nice graphically, with the fighters looking as good as ever. However they are drawn in a much more cartoony style than before, which I personally believe looks good, although it might not be to everyones taste. There are some decent backgrounds too, especially Hon Fu's stage on the lift, which is my personal favourite. Sound wise, the special effects are good, but I really didn't like the music in this one as much as in the others. There are only one or two stages where I enjoyed it (again, such as Hon Fu's), but on many stages the music is horrible and definitely not as good as the previous games in my opinion. I don't quite know what SNK where thinking when they composed it, but it must have been different people than the ones who did the music for Fatal Fury 2/Special.

Overall:

Overall, if you like the Fatal Fury games, then you are definitely going to like this game. However, I definitely prefer its prequel Fatal Fury Special, as it just plays better in my opinion. Give it a try though because you may disagree... it's a good game anyway!
