Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s (Super)Sonic!

Until 1998 it was unlikely Sega’s mascot would appear on any other platform. His rival Mario even went rogue on Philips’ CDI but it didn’t appear Sonic would walk that way. Therefore it was a huge surprise Sonic appeared on our beloved NGPC, the new handheld of SNK. SNK attacked Nintendo on his own firm handheld ground and cooperating with SEGA wasn’t a bad idea. It seems SEGA waited to cooperate with another Japanese hotshot to plague his rival. Or was there the intention to go even further then that? We all know how it ended, but nonetheless the cooperation between SNK & SEGA delivered an astonishing Sonic game who can compete with the better Sonic console titles.

Sonic Pocket Adventure (SPA) uses the best elements of the Sonic titles, being a warm welcome for fans of the series. Borrowing the level design from Sonic 2. Playing the music from Sonic 3, Sonic Jam and Sonic & Knuckles. Using the graphics style from Sonic 1. Sonic Team mixed it all successfully together, even the legendary digital SSEEGGAA scream during booting up isn’t forgotten to hold the nostalgic feeling. SPA is a old school Sonic adventure with added (collectible) features, giving the player a more richer single & multiplayer experience.

The Main Menu option ‘Room Screen’ features these extras. The room is divided into three doors; Trial, Duel and Puzzle room. In Trial Mode you’ll try to race as fast as possible through a level, while the advanced mode beholds a requirement to collect 50 rings to set a legit time. Duel Mode is almost identical, exchanging the time for a (girl)friend as your new enemy. The Puzzle Room gives you the opportunity to solve some puzzles with collected puzzle pieces. Each Act keeps one piece hidden.

SPA contains 7 zones (each divided in 2 acts); Neo South Island, Secret Plant, Cosmic Casino, Aquatic Relix, Sky Chase, Aerobase and Gigantic Angel. Sonic Team has done again a terrific job designing the levels. Different layers, loops, corkscrews, irritating enemies, fast action and power-ups at difficult to reach places; all of these elements, which made Sonic God in the nineties, are here. Sonic sprints, jumps and flies like he should. Nostalgia plays a important role when playing the game. Unfortunately, it isn’t the main reason to keep playing. The acclaimed level-design and simple but addictive gameplay keeps you coming back for more.

SPA is not only one of the best mobile Sonic versions, it’s certainly one of the easiest to complete. It’s possible to adjust the difficulty and use unlimited continues, because the games saves automatically after each act. To make things even easier, you can adjust the number of lives when you start a game. But on the other hand; you are able to give yourself a real challenge, using less lives or no continues at all. So the game has been made accessible for everybody. Despite collecting puzzle pieces, Sonic’s adventure isn’t very long, so it isn’t the best choice if you are looking for a one-time lengthy NGPC experience. But wherever you are, if you suddenly need some fast paced action on your Pocket; Sonic is with you in all its glory. Awesome!

Great review for a great game!
I can only agree, Sonic Pocket Adventure is not only one of the best NGPC games, it's also one of the best Sonic games overall!

Good job Sensi. I remember finding all the puzzle pieces back in the day, thus, getting maximum enjoyment out of this title. The last one took me weeks to find. IIRC there still isn't a FAQ online that shows the location of all the puzzle pieces...

I've found it ironic that while the Game Gear has the definitive handheld Bust-a-Move (IMO), a well known Neo-Geo game, The NGPC has the definitive handheld Sonic (IMO), a well known Sega game.
