Introduction:

A Year after the first Fatal Fury came a sequel, imaginatively titled “Fatal Fury 2”. Improving on pretty much everything from the first game, including better graphics, nice sound and lots of new characters, this was a very good sequel indeed. I mean hey - if nothing else it did introduce everones favourite Ninja, Mai Shiranui! She isn't quite so "animated" in this game though if you know what I mean, but that doesn't really affect the game play so let's move on! :-)

Gameplay:

SNK refined the control method in this sequel. This time all four buttons are used instead of three. A and C are used for light and hard punches, and B and D are for light and hard kicks. They did keep the two plane system though, which not everyone is a fan of. If you press A and B together you can transfer between the top and bottom tier of the screen, and pressing C and D together delivers a strong attack that sends your opponent flying across the screen. Some people consider this to be the bane of the series and one ofthe things that spoils it, but I have to say it never really bothered me too much, in fact I thought it was quite cool at the time the game was first released.

Graphics & Sound:

While the style was much the same, the graphics were a considerable improvement on the first Fatal Fury, with the fighters looking a little more detailed. The stages looked very good too, and some (like Mai's stage) had really nice parallax scrolling, which gave the stages an impressive extra feeling of depth.

The sound effects are standard fair for the most part, and they do their job well enough. I also really like most of the music in this one too. A lot of the tracks in this game were remixed and re-used in other SNK games later on, which kind of proves their quality. SNK have had some great composers in the past, and I can remember this being one of the first SNK games were I really enjoyed the soundtrack.

Check out some Fatal Fury 2 music, especially Mai's stage music, as it still sounds as good as ever in my opinion!

Intro sequence - 14 seconds, 189K
Music from the intro movie.

Mai Shiranui's stage - 59 seconds, 990K
Mai's music is one of my favourite pieces of music in this game, it suits the stage perfectly.

Overall:

Like its predecessor, I spent a fair amount of money playing this machine back when I was in school and I still enjoy playing it today. Altogether this was a considerable improvement on the original. The Fatal Fury games have had lots of sequels though, and obviously the later entries into the series are better. The next game in the series called Fatal Fury Special is an updated version of this game with some new options, so you may be better off going with that one unless you are a completist like me and want the whole series! FF2 is still a good game though, whichever way you look at it.
