Review 1 - by Kazuya_UK

This review is written strictly for shoot-em-up fans that want an un-biased up to date review from a fellow shoot-em-up fan who is new to the game. Itís for those who may have been put off by the poor reviews when it first came out, or even by the low 34 Megs size, or those who just want to know if it is worth adding to their collection. The answer to that question is simply, Yes!

Ignoring any comparisons with the behemoths that are Pulstar and Blazing Star, this is an excellent title in itís own right. Yes, if you have the money, go for those titles first (perhaps), but that is not a reason to miss out on Andro Dunos.

Think of a really top-notch Megadrive or PC Engine shooter, but with slightly better graphics and you will not go far wrong. It is similar in game play to the ThunderForce and Gradius series, but with other elements thrown in as well. Itís a horizontal shooter that also goes both vertical and diagonal at times. It looks, sounds and plays much better than it should for only 34 Megs. Backgrounds are varied, from a lunar landscape to an industrial complex. Enemies are also varied and fight you from the air and on the ground. A good effect on level 1 is where a box appears out of the background and the enemies seemingly appear from nowhere.

The difficulty level is just about right and the control is very tight. Itís easier than Last Resort so you may actually see some of the game you are paying for therefore value is good for what is still a fairly rare cart.

In conclusion therefore, if you are looking to add another shoot-em-up to your collection, enjoy traditional shooters and like Megadrive and PC Engine style games, and havenít got £500 to spend on Pulstar or Blazing Star, then buy this with confidence. It is a great little game that I actually prefer to Alpha Mission II and Last Resort, although they are both good games as well.

Graphics: 7/10
Colourful and well defined with varied backgrounds. The between level screens are good as well

Sound: 7/10
Some quite catchy tunes and appropriate sound effects

Attract Mode: 7/10
Shows different levels, title and high scores Ė well presented all round

Gameplay: 9/10
Fast and frantic but never too difficult or frustrating

Control: 9/10
Very tight control with your ship nipping around at a good speed

Expect to pay:
£150 plus for a 2nd hand Jap version. £50 plus for a UK version (mine was £65 brand new and sealed just a few weeks ago).

Overall: 8/10
For shoot-em-up fans

All of the above are much better choices than Andro Dunos!
