Introduction:

Déjà vu or what? I feel like I have played Cyber Lip before. Let me see… No I definitely haven't played it before, but for some strange reason or another I've got an eerie feeling that I have...

That is how I felt when I first played Cyber Lip, and I didn't understand why. Then I suddenly realised why. This is very much the poorer cousin of the classic Contra series. The level design, the way you hang off poles at the top of the screen and even some of the bosses remind me of it. I know lots of games have similarities, but for some reason Cyber Lip feels like a direct rip off of Contra to me. Unfortunately this is where the similarities end.

Gameplay:

The game starts off O.K., but you soon realize that you cannot fire diagonally even though the computer can, which is extremely stupid and annoying. Also, when you are on a higher platform than someone else, they can fire at you from underneath but you can't fire down at them. This makes the game very difficult. There are different types of weapons to pick up, like flame-throwers and bazookas, but most of the time I found myself using the bog standard weapon because it seemed more effective most of the time.

Graphics & Sound:

Graphically it is not too bad, while it's nothing special, it isn't terrible either. In the sound department, the music and FX are passable, albeit forgettable, although there is quite a lot of speech in it, which is nice.

Overall:

While the Contra series of games are classics, especially the SNES version (known as Probotector in some countries like the UK), this is DEFINITELY not. Don't get me wrong, I know it's not the worst game of its type (in fact some people love it), but the main problem I have with this game is that it is just so boring. Even if it is an old game it still doesn't justify the horrible control flaws mentioned above either. Cyber Lip didn't manage to keep my interest for very long at all and I couldn't be bothered to complete it. If you want a decent game like this for your Neo Geo, buy one of the fantastic Metal Slug games. Failing that go and buy a SNES for cheap with Contra 3! Just don't bother with this.

Umm maybe a bit harsh there but he has a point. I find it an enjoyable little game which i dont play often but have fun when i do. Its a very old game so like most first gen neo games its very dated but woth getting if you see it cheap as it sort of feels like a sci fi grandad to Metal Slug.
