Further Info:

A brand new game, not a conversion of a Neo Geo title. SNK planned on releasing Metal Slug 1 for the GBA, but although it was worked on, they cancelled it.

Not much is really given plot wise. I could be wrong but it seems like the game deals with battling Morden and his troops again. MS games never needed to be real deep in my opinion so I don't think this really harms anything.

The thing I noticed first was how the two playable characters Walter and Tyra seem badly recycled off of Nadia and Trevor from MS4. Getting into the game I ran into the typical green enemy troops and numerous vehicles like the helicopters and bomb tanks that were copied right out of the previous games. Besides feeling a lack of effort being put into the enemies the animations for the sprites were missing numerous frames of animation and look somewhat choppy like in Metal Slug X for the Playstation. A MS veteran will probably recognize the styling of the stages as some of them appear a little too similar to previous game's areas. On a positive note though some of the POW's appeared to be brand new along the shaman enemies. The artwork for bosses at the beginning of each stage looks nice too. Really I would have hoped they had tried drawing fresh sprites for this game and give it it's own look rather then copying off the old games.

Stage music is fine. It reminds me of the first MS game in that it's not too heavy but it still has a rock feel to it. But other then that I was displeased to hear practically every sound effect ripped straight out of the other MS games. Screams, explosions, gunfire, and vehicles all sound the same as ever. This isn't awful but it just feels so lazy. Once again I was hoping they wouldn't do this too much and make the game more unique on a different console but they obviously didn't.

Aside from doing your usual missions you also can get cards for your collection in the game menu and POW's rescued on a successful mission will also be logged in your database. In-game action is the same chore but you can't do the slide move from MS 5. This was a great innovation to the series and I'm surprised they didn't include it in this game since it would probably be very helpful. A few nice additions but nothing really to get excited about.

I waited for this game hoping it would break new ground for the series but it just feels so horribly slapped together. If a sequel to this game gets created it could really use some brand new designs. The idea itself is nice but it needs a lot of work.
