Introduction:

This game reminds me of The Super Spy on the Neo Geo, except instead of playing from a first person viewpoint, it's third person, with your character being represented as a wire frame (see the screenshots above). This means that it is possible to have a two-player game in Crossed Swords, which makes things more interesting and is definitely a big plus point.

Gameplay:

Game play consists of dodging left and right to avoid enemy's attacks and striking back with your sword to kill them. Pressing up or down brings your shield up to defend from high or low attacks. You also get some magical spells; these can be cast to defeat enemies by pressing the B button, but it does depend on the weapon you are carrying. To get different weapons you buy them from a guy who turns up at the end of each level. The main thing that bugs me is that you can only walk across about half of the screen (the middle section), not all of it; this feels very restricting. If you are in two player mode, player one takes the left side while player two takes the right side of the screen.

Graphics & Sound:

Visually it's good for a game of its age, if not outstanding, but being old you wouldn't expect anything really special. Most of the enemies are the same so it can get very repetetive after you've killed the same guy about 100 times! There are some nice special effects for some of the spells though. The sound is also fairly standard, although there is some half decent music in places.

Overall:

Overall, while Crossed Swords is similar to “The Super Spy” in a way, I think it is a much better game. It is dated, but can be fun for a while, although I don't think I would actually want to have it in my personal collection, as I couldn't see myself playing it for that long. Fans of this game might want to check out Crossed Swords 2 on the Neo Geo CD if you have access to it (it was not released in cartridge form).
