Review 1 - by Alex Green

King of Fighters R-1 on the black and white Neo Geo Pocket was more or less the handheld version of The King of Fighters '97, so it's logical that King of Fighters R-2 color is more or less a conversion of The King of Fighters '98. While not everything from King of Fighters '98 is included (a few characters didn't make it etc), it is still one of the best fighters to ever grace a handheld system.

If you know how to play KOF '98, then you will instantly feel at home with KOF R-2. You are still given the choice between Advanced and Extra game modes (see reviews of the KOF games or check the FAQ's below for more info on this) and most moves are all performed in exactly the same way. The Neo Geo Pockets mini joystick does pose a bit of a problem for some people when they try to pull off certain moves, but a little perseverance really pays off, as it is FAR more comfortable for extended periods of game play than the D-Pad on the Gameboy.

The standard arcade style team and single modes are enough to hold any KOF fans interest for a while, but for some added replay value, SNK included the "making" mode. This is (sort of) an RPG type thing where you gain different skills by defeating other fighters. There is a vague storyline to it, although it isn't great (especially if you have to put up with SNK's usual bad translation and silly English!), but it's nice to have it included because it is something else to do when you tire of arcade mode.

KOF R-2 has been well ported graphically from the arcade version to the handheld machine. The animation is of a decent standard and the backgrounds are very colourful. It's just a shame that the NGPC is limited to 3 colours per sprite, because it means that the characters suffer a little... all things considered though they look very good. I dare you to find anything on the Gameboy Color that looks anywhere near as good - just take a look at Street Fighter Alpha on it! SFA on the Gameboy is not a bad game, but graphically its WAY inferior!

By the same token, it's a shame that the sound isn't a great deal better than the Color Game Boy. Having said that, it still amazes me that SNK still make some of the music on these games sound good. On a lot of handheld games I would probably turn the sound right down, but not on this. If you are familiar with the tunes on this games big screen cousin you will recognize them on NGPC straight away. Admittedly the sound effects are a little bland, but you wouldn't expect them to be much better.

I like The King of Fighters R-2 a lot! That said I actually bought SNK Vs Capcom MOTM and played that to death before I really played this game properly and in my opinion MOTM is a better game, especially with all the mini games etc to keep you occupied. It's still a worthy purchase though and at the time of writing this it holds second place on the list of top NGPC beat 'em ups.

Graphics: 8/10
Sound: 9/10
Game play: 8/10
Replay Value: 8/10

Overall 8/10
