A very weird game this one! Captain Tomaday is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up in which you play as a mutated Tomato (see the intro!). I gather that the programmers were high on something when they came up with the concept for this game! In actual fact I was told that Tomaday was an old German cartoon, so it must have been the designers of that who were high on something! Suffice to say, it's a little weird!
Gameplay:
Basically, instead of firing lasers or missiles, or any of the other usual shoot 'em up weapons, you hit enemies with your fists (yes, this tomato has hands!). Pressing the A button punches with your left fist and B punches with the right fist. You can press both buttons together so that you hit with both at the same time. Also, if you punch with only one fist for a while, the other fist gets charged up and you can then hit once with that fist to cause extra damage. Along the way you can pick up power ups that either make you bigger and stronger, or that split you into two tomatoes, which means that until you get hit you can cause a lot of damage.
Graphics & Sound:
Presentation wise and graphically, this game can't really be faulted. The graphics look like a cartoon and are fairly simple, but they suit the game very well. There are a fairly decent variety of different enemies, including bats, birds, skulls, pumpkins and lots of other crazy stuff. The music and the sound effects in this game also suit it well, but there isn't really anything amazing. The music that plays when you are in game will probably stay in your head for hours after you finish playing the game though, because it can be very monotonous after a while.
Overall:
Captain Tomaday isn't really the best game you will find, despite being quite new, but if you are looking for something a little different (and believe me, this is different!) you could do a lot worse than to try it. If you are looking for a serious shoot 'em up though, you should try the games mentioned below. If you do get this game, it should at least make you laugh a bit at the very least. It's not too big on replay value though in my opinion.
Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 6/10
Game play: 6/10
Replay Value: 5/10
