Introduction:

Golf games are one of those genres that probably shouldn't be all that popular, but still are. When you think about it, they are very simple, mostly just a test of your reactions, not a lot more. For some reason though, a good golf game can somehow be extremely addictive. I enjoy this type of game a lot; in fact I loved the Neo Geo MVS version of Neo Turf Masters, which is excellent. This portable version manages to live up to that reputation and is also a very good game. If you ever played the MVS version, then you will have a good idea of what to expect. It's more or less a straight conversion, with basically the same options. It is made even cooler by the fact that it's on the NGPC, because you can play anytime anywhere.

Presentation:

As with the MVS version, the presentation is top notch. Everything looks very nice, from the menu screens, to the little intro pictures for each course and also the various cut scenes for when you finish a hole. Of course, the presentation wouldn't mean much if the game wasn't up to scratch, but I was very impressed. You get a choice of eight different golfers from different countries, all with various abilities. Each has their own particular strength/weaknesses, be it driving, accuracy etc. After choosing a golfer, you are also given a choice between 3 different courses to play on. All of the courses start off with fairly easy holes, but they gradually get quite hard the further you progress, some of them very tricky.

Gameplay:

When you come to take your shot, you are presented with an overhead view of the course, with a small map on the right hand side. After deciding where to place the ball, you are given a view from behind your golfer. From here, you can change clubs by pressing up and down and also set how much you want to slice/hook the ball by pressing left and right. Once you have everything set up, pressing the A button starts the power gauge on the left moving. As with most golf games, you have to stop the bar moving at the right point. Once you've done that, a separate gauge starts moving underneath that one. This lets you choose whether to hit the ball high or low, after that your player will swing and you get an overhead view to show you where the ball goes. Once it has finished moving, you are given a close up shot, which shows whether it has landed on the fairway/rough/bunker or whatever. One thing to watch for is whether the wind is blowing or not (indicated by a pointer at the top of the screen).

When you reach the green, putting is also a simple (well theoretically at least) thing to do. As with normal shots, you aim a pointer in the direction you want to go, and then you just stop the power gauge at the correct point (which is pointed out on the power gauge for you). That should be easy, but you have to take into account whether the green is sloping or not, which can make things a lot more painful :)

Graphics & Sound:

Graphically this game is, well... functional. A golf game is never really going to look incredible, but I have to say that this game does a very good job. It looks very clear and is extremely well laid out, which is all you need to be honest. Couldn't really be much better for a handheld machine! I'd have to say that the same thing goes for the sound. The sound effects are fairly good and the music (from what I can remember) is the same as the MVS version for the most part. It can get a little annoying after you have been playing the game for a while, because every course has only one piece of music each for while you are lining up your shots. While it sounds fine for a while, you will probably want to turn it off after about an hour or so.

Overall:

I actually surprised myself when I purchased this game (my second NGPC purchase). It's not the type of thing I would usually buy, but I did so because it is a perfect game for a handheld. It really has kept me addicted while I have been on long journeys and I think I will still be playing this for quite a long time. This game also supports link up mode, which is great fun. A perfect game if you are looking for something a little different to the usual fighting/puzzle games.
