Speaking as an European, no console can do without a good soccer game. Lucky for us SNK agreed upon this and created Neogeo cup '98. A soccer title for the NGPC unlike his counterparts on the home consoles and arcades.

The overall presentation is good though not spectacular. Nothing special but clear and effective. After pushing the a button at the intro screen, you get the three options. These are: Single, 2p Play, Story. Single is basically a quick game. You choose your team and opponent and if you don't change your formation or starters, or read the data about your opponent you can start a game in a matter of seconds.

2p Play is basically the same only with a friend through a link-cable. Story mode is what it's all about. Not surprisingly this mode starts with a brief story calling you the manager of a team of your choice. After this you enter your name and you can start. The presentation of the options here is much better and more pleasing to the eyes.

You can choose between: Neogeo Cup, Test match, vs-match, team-status, soccer shop and save. The neo geo cup is the main event, win your matches to see the glorious ending. The test match is good for scouting your opponent for weaknesses without to much risk and the vs-match let's you send your data to another NGPC (I don't know what happens next, since I never had the chance to try it). In team status you can check al your stats, your formation, amount of fans and money etc. The money you earn by scoring goals and winning matches can be spend in the soccer shop and let's you buy, trade or sell items that enhance a players ability on the field. And finally you can save al your progress through the save option.

The most important part of any game. The basic controls depend on whether you have the ball or not. With the ball in your possession you use the joystick to move, a button to pass (tap button for a short pass, hold button for long pass. There are 2 phases for the long pass hold normal for normal long pass and hold long for long long pass), b button to shoot at goal if your on the opponents half or clear the ball if your on your own half. You can use the option button to pause the game and make a substitution. You can also make headers, volley's, trap blocks, dash dribbles feint shots/passes and a cutback. I found this all adds up to an entertaining but flawed game. It's almost impossible to score if you first start this game and when you find out how to do it, it becomes more of a trick you perform then a game you play. There are certain areas on the pitch from where every shot is a goal. These vary on the player's ability and power ups used. Passing is also hard to do and I ended up playing kick and rush almost al the time. This doesn't mean that the gameplay is bad but it loses in depth considerably.

Graphics & Sound:

Sound wise there's noting special here, all basic music and sound effects that do there job, nothing more, nothing less.

The graphics are typical NGPC cartoon style they do there job well but it's a shame the colours are a bit bland. There are some nice screens after you score and in between that ad to the experience, but that's more of an presentation issue.

I have some mixed feelings about this title. In the beginning trying to win was frustrating as hell, shooting at goal all the time but never scoring a single goal. But when you find out how it's done the story mode makes you want to keep playing even if the actual soccer experience isn't all that great. Without the story mode I wouldn't recommended this title to anyone other than the die-hard soccer fans who only have a NGPC. It takes some time to appreciate this title but if you can hang in there after the first hour this will by a reasonable sports title and the only soccer title or that matter on the NGPC.

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 6/10
Game play: 5/10
Replay Value: 8/10
