Review 2 - by Kazuya UK

This is another one of SNK's 14 launch titles. Looking at the box you might think this was just your bog standard handheld affair, an action/platform shooter in the in the Turok 2 (Game Boy) mould. Think again wise guy, Metal Slug is the most exciting thing on any handheld in a long while, it combines the very best aspects of every side scroller ever, mixes it with game play as smooth as Sonic and spills in a whole load of extras iced with a thick layer of bright and colourful graphics.

The sheer variety in this game is really amazing, you can run along wielding a vastly varied arsenal, drive a tank, become a paratrooper, pilot a jump jet and ride a rail cart. And this is all without finishing the game! Your character is very responsive, the 8 way stick controls both movement and the direction of fire, this takes a bit to get used to but once you are into the game you wouldn't want to swap it, it means that you can shoot a helicopter at a forty five degree angle at the same time as running!

The level design is truly spectacular. There are some levels involving lots of running and jumping, some all out crazy firepower levels, some flying, some easy and some difficult. There are a variety of locations too, cities, railways and jungles to trek through, not to mention the prison camp.

As for the sound then. Heck I don't know; you kind of ignore it, as the game is so damn engrossing. Hang on; I'll go listen to it for a while............................ Well waddya know, it's pretty damned good. The machine gun could have a bit more whack to it though, it sounds like it's been silenced, WHO NEEDS A SILENCER WHEN YOU'RE LUGGING GRENADES!

All in all Metal slug rocks, it is so addictive it is unbelievable! You just keep going back for more, it's quite tricky so it'll take you a while to finish. When you have finished it, it'll take you a while to finish it again but this time by a completely different route. Metal Slug is definitely the first game NGPC owners should have in their library.

    Graphics: 8/10
    Sound: 7/10
    Game play: 9/10
    Replay Value: 8/10

    Overall 9/10
