As suggested by the name this is second in the series of The King of Fighters games for NGPC. If there is one category of games that NGPC is not lacking in it is fighting games, so I wasn't expecting this to be anything spectacular when compared to the outstanding Samurai showdown 2. It was a nice surprise however when I found out that it was a very, very good game. In fact it is a dangerously close second to Samurai showdown 2.

Enough of the waffle then and onto the game: It starts off with a fairly decent and inspiring intro scene, which gives you a sniff of what to expect, i.e. the stunning graphics. The menu system is your standard kit, but there is nothing wrong with the standard alloys on a Ferrari now is there?

In the normal mode you can fight with either one or three fighters from a large selection each with their own strong forte. The game play is what really brings this game into it's own though, with the 8 way pad some really impressive combos can be performed with stunning visuals to accompany them. Responses from all of the characters are fast and smooth.

Compared to Mortal Kombat 4 on GBC, KOF R2 is sharp, clear and smooth instead of fuzzy, blurred and jerky. The sound isn't quite as good as the rest of the game, but who cares? With game play this engrossing you soon forget it.

The making mode is pretty original allowing you to build up a character with lots of different skills and weapons! When you are happy with a character you can transfer it onto your Dreamcast with KOF 99 and a link cable.

Overall this game is superb, almost faultless, just not quite as polished as Samurai Showdown 2, so by a slither SS2 wins it.

    Graphics: 9/10
    Sound: 7/10
    Game play: 8/10
    Replay Value: 8/10

    Overall 8/10
