SNK Vs Capcom: Card Fighters Clash (NGPC)

Fatal Fury is arguably SNK's most well known series. And even if it isn't, it was the first one on one fighting game SNK ever made. So its good to know that Fatal Fury appeared in its own Pocket Fighting game…. Just a shame to hear that it's the most flawed fighting game on the system.

FF First Contact is based on Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, a brilliant game that remains the pinnacle of the Fatal Fury series (Not counting Garou of course) due to its plane shifting, Breakshot Counters and Sheer speed. It's a shame to see that only one of those is valid for this game. First off: Its quite slow. This isn't a problem for all of the other fighting games on NGPC, but for FF it just seems strange. Matches in RBFF 2 seemed to be at breakneck speeds, while here it feels too much like King of Fighters… The lack of Plane Shifts is a big shame. A simple system (Such as KOF 95's “Step Outs”) Would have worked quite well, with an inclusion of some follow up attacks it would have been even better… but the only thing you can do while being attacked here is block and Breakshot, if you have the Half Super Bar to pull one off.

However, the Character Roster is great! Sure Terry, Mai and Kim have been in KOF R1, with Terry and Mai returning for R2 and MOTM with Geese, but the new blood easily eliminates any fears of this being a lazy effort by SNK, for the moment at least… Appearing alongside the mentioned four are: Andy, Joe, Yamazaki, Billy, Krauser, Rick, Xiangfei, Alfred (Who's playable here) and Lao (The guy from the intro, Totally new but only available in link-up mode) a brilliant cast, it's just a shame that Blue Mary isn't in here…. Still Krauser's there so I'm happy! The Sound and Graphics are good, Mostly the same as other Pocket fighting games. Music is very good, but I always thought that Fatal Fury had the best music in all of SNK's game anyway. Backgrounds are average… some look good (Terry's) others look less good (Joe's), and everyone looks like who they are supposed to. There are Three problems I found with this game though: 1: Aforementioned lack of Plane Shifting and a drop in speed. 2: The shocking lack of game modes. Haven't got a friend with a NGPC and a copy of this? Then there's only the standard 1 player game. Nothing to collect, nothing to unlock (Except Alfred but you can do that on your first go!) and the endings are just a congratulations screen followed by a picture of your character doing something…. Doesn't give much lasting appeal does it? 3: The control doesn't seem that great. Doing Power Attacks becomes a chore as the response time seems too long. Regular attacks and moving around is fine, but using Power attacks slows down the pace of the game once more.

I'm a real big Fatal Fury fan, but this just seems to be a rush job. True, the game it's based on seemed so too, but there was a great game underneath. Is this? No, unfortunately. Although you may have the impression this game is total crap, remember that it's better then any fighting game on Gameboy Color, and if it came out on that instead…. It'd get a 5/5 mark. However, on NGPC….. The competitions too strong. Still worth picking up though, where else can you play as Joe Higashi on NGPC?

Presentation: 4/5
Graphics: 4/5
Sound: 5/5
Playability: 4/5
Lastability: 4/5

Not the best Fighting game ever, and the weakest on NGPC, but still worth picking up. Mainly due to great music and a cool cast. Get it if you can, but not before you get all the other great fighting games on NGPC!

Overall Rating: 4/5
