Most of the games on the Neo Geo Pocket might be fighters, but there are a small number of games from other genres available - this is one of them, and while it isn't the best game ever, Crush Roller is something different that will give you something to do for a while... if you can get past the flaws.

The basic idea of this game is similar to Pacman, however instead of collecting pills, you have to paint the whole of a maze in one colour. Once all of it is painted, you move onto the next stage and do the same, with each stage becoming harder with more (and faster) enemies to avoid. For those who don't know, this game is a conversion of a very old arcade game (not Neo Geo though) and the graphics in the NGPC version are actually better!

Each stage has two or more bad guys that chase you around, but as with Pacman and its power pills, there is a way to deal with them at least temporarily. There are rollers at set places on each maze that you can push along to crush them (hence the name). As in Pacman, they do reappear after a short time and they become faster than they were before.

One thing that I find interesting in Crush Roller is that you can "collect" Pokemon style creatures on each level called "Ojama's". They hang around for a while and you are best to collect them quickly as they leave footprints that need to be painted over again. You can check how many of the 25 creatures you have got by choosing the "collection" option on the title screen. I'm not sure if collecting them gives you anything other than extra points, but its fun all the same.

Graphics & Sound:

"Functional" is the best way to describe the graphics in Crush Roller. For this type of game on this system they couldn't be any better, but its fair to say they are far from amazing. They are crisp, clear and colourful (and also a little better than the aging coin-op), so it gets 10/10 for doing their job... Just don't expect anything special.

The same goes for the sound too. You could quite happily play this game with it turned off; in fact you probably WILL turn it off after 1/2 hour. I found the music and SFX were quite annoying, so I turned the volume down to stop it from driving me (and the other people around me) mad! Having the sound off won't stop you from being able to play Crush Roller properly anyway, as you don't really need it.

Sound isn't the only thing that will begin to annoy you either... There are some bad flaws in the game play too. The worst of these is that sometimes there are VERY tiny sections that you may have left unpainted which are extremely hard to spot. When you've almost cleared a stage, it's frustrating to be killed while you are trying to find the tiny area that you have missed! It also seems unfair that some bad guys move at twice your speed so it's impossible to get away from them most of the time.

Faults aside this is a good enough game to pass a few hours away with, but it's not really a game that I would buy personally. Crush Roller can get boring before long, so it's definitely not an essential purchase. If you want a game like this, my advice would be to get Namco's Pacman instead.

Graphics: 6/10
Sound: 5/10
Game play: 7/10
Replay Value: 5/10

Overall Rating: 6/10
