My first kof review! The 9th installment in the series proves to be quite a game so I couldn't pass up a chance to review it.

Story 6/10

Well, technically there isn't really a story since this is a dream match like 98. However, it's nice to take a break from all the crazy plotlines and just duke it out. I've been told that since 98 every 4 years will be a dream match. As crazy as that sounds we'll all probably be playing something like this in 2006!

Graphics 10/10

Excellent. The character artwork has massivly improved over last years' in that it actually looks like the character and not some bizzare sketch. Colors are slightly darker which makes them look more vibrant then the past two KOF's. Backgrounds have noticably improved as well. Character animation is about as good as ever (although I'm not surprised Eolith gave Kim more frames of animation since their Korean). Some characters get new standing animations which people will either love or hate, but I find them very cool. The intro and various menu and option screens also look very nice as usual. Basically everything a KOF game should be.

Sound 9/10

While I didn't hate the music from 2K1, this year's brings the traditional feel from the older KOF's like 96 and 97. Some stages have their own music while the other ones are always playing your opponent's music. These usually are remixes of old KOF tunes and aren't all that bad. The Orochi team's music, for example, sounds pretty close to how it was back in 97 when they first appeared. All new voice actors in the game sound pretty good (Terry sounds just as goofy as ever). Again what you'd come to expect from a KOF game.

Gameplay 10/10

This year's fighting system has been heavily simplified and many will agree that it's for the better. Namely the removal of strikers (personally I never had a problem with them though). The energy bar is a combination of the extra and advanced modes from 97 and 98. You can build up to 5 stocks which you can do the following:

1. Do a DM and use up one stock.

2. Use 1 stock to go into max mode (press B+C). Then you can do one DM or a SDM (requires one more stock).

3. When your health is extremely low you can do a HDM after going into max mode (the HDM will require 1 more stock just like a SDM). Smaller changes include the absense of the wire attack and some moves have lost their juggleability (ex. Athena's Shining Crystal Bit). A very nice system for beginners and veterans alike.

Overall 10/10

KOF 2002 takes the more advanced aspects of the new games and combines them with everything that made the old games legendary, creating a nicer looking version of the older KOF's. Even if ou were turned away by the last KOF's this one won't disappoint you (although I still can't believe they left out King 0_o).
