Introduction

If you think this game is the best KOF out of the whole series, you have my sympathy.

Just when SNK was going to reach the light at the end of the tunnel, another company purchases the rights and pick up the pieces of debris left on the floor. It was the Korean-based company, Eolith that would throw KOF a lifeline. The first game they revive was the popular KOF series. Could they reclaim the recognition of this famous title with KOF2001?


Graphics: 5/10

As we all know, the old fighters haven't change that much, but they still look great after all these years. As for the newer characters and bosses, other then Angel, all them have that weird and crappy aura around them. The thing that really sucks things down is the artwork and the stages. It makes you question did the artist really thought nobody would find the artwork somewhat ugly? Some of the stages will make sense and crisp in detail while some will hurt your head. It seems like the company went a few steps back in time in the graphics' area because the majority of the game lack some coloring.


Gameplay/Controls: 7/10

After the last two series, they finally get rid of the armor/counter modes and present an interesting fighting system. You still pick four people, but the striking system changed for the better. You can now have zero to three strikers for backup. The catch is the less/more strikers you have, the longer/shorter your super bar goes and the active fighters are become less/more durable, being weaker/stronger in fights. So if you want all four and no strikers, you only get one level long super bar, so you can't perform SDM attacks. Have a one man army with the other three as strikers; you get a short super bar that store up to four levels. A negative that you have to deal with is that the damage intake is too much from any type of command moves, no matter how you setup your team's lineup. Lin's hand slaps SDM is good enough evidence of that. The only time the enemy AI is worth fighting is the two end bosses. As for controls, everything works just like before and the requirements to call out certain strikers are nicely done. I did have a problem with how they gave some old and new fighters some rather strange movement to special/super moves when they didn't need to. One of Ryo's supers went from a quarter circle back-half circle forward with a punch motion to a quarter circle forward with a weak punch, followed by a hard punch, becoming one of the most irritating and confusing moves to excuse. Don't even get me started on the quadruple quarter circle forward attacks. Your hands will beg you to stop trying to do them.


Sound/Music: 5/10

Luckily, they didn't do wrong with the voice department. At least the fighters' voices correctly fit the people they were given to. Punching and kicking sounds alright. The music is bad. It sounds like that they got somebody with little knowledge of music and gave him an old Casio keyboard to produce the entire soundtrack. Even fans of techno would want to avoid the techno stuff they put in. The announcer should be happy he isn't annoying. Its unbearable to listen to. It may sound good on a 16 bit video game system but not here.


Replay Value : 5/10

By now, I have stated how much I hated the four member team idea. Even ignoring that part, seeing all those character on the player select screen, you will get overwhelmed by it and not in a good way. The battles themselves aren't as different as they should be. When battling the AI, they always do the three fighters-one striker option. No mixing it up. The teams' endings, also sports the bad artwork again that will leave you just walking away from the arcade cabinet.

Overall : 5/10

I never thought I would ever see a KOF this bad in my life, but there's a first time for everything. What killed it was the overall feel. Other then the known fighters, you won't find a spec of SNK's influences anywhere. It's like they took out all the essence of what made KOF the way it was and replace with their own style since they brought it. Would I say it's the worst KOF out of series? No, but it's was close from being there.
