This CD is something of an oddity really. It's not exactly a game, more a collection of artwork, music and information regarding the storyline of KOF '96. If you've never really been interested in the series story, then you would be much better of getting the normal game and sticking to that. Oh, being able to read Japanese is also a good idea, as I gather this was a Japanese only title and almost all of the text is Japanese.

There are a number of different sections to this CD (see the above screenshot on the top left). The first one lets you view the opening sequence and also gives the opportunity to read about the "official" storyline behind the King of Fighters tournament. If you highlight this option and then press up or down, it lets you read the "true" storyline behind KOF. I'm not 100% certain of the story behind all the KOF games so it would be nice to read it. Unfortunately as I mentioned before it is all in Japanese so I can't.

I skipped that option pretty quickly and moved on to the next one, "Character Profiles". This option takes you to the character select screen where you can choose any fighter and view some info about them. On that particular persons screen, you get a variety of options (Again, the language stops me from knowing what they are exactly) and each time you pick one the character says something. I can tell that they are statistics about the characters age, height etc. Some of them seem quite funny, for instance choosing one of the options on Athena's section made her look very embarrassed... It gave me what looked like some statistics about her measurements (!) and she didn't seem as if she liked it :-) The final selection on each page lets you listen to the voice actor of your chosen character. Obviously most of them are in Japanese, only one of them is actually in English (Wolfgang Krauser). So again, unless you speak the language its another option that is fairly useless.

Next there is the command list, which quite obviously lists all of the chosen persons special moves. After reading them you can go into a short battle to practice them. I didn't think a lot of this option, as it would be far better if you could also go into a practice mode against a "dummy" character that doesn't move. A quick forty-second fight doesn't really help at all. It would also be very good if it told you a few combos to practice too. Most of the special moves can be figured out easily anyway, or if not you can easily get a free FAQ from many sites on the net (see my review pages of the games in question, or visit the sites on my links page). This would be a better bet than using this CD.

The "Sound Play" option is just to let you listen to the various music tracks in the game and also lets you view some artwork too. Some of the music on this CD is very good, so this option is well worth a look. But then again if you had the real game you could just as easily put the disc into your CD player and listen to it like that.

This is quite an interesting CD, but is only worthwhile if you are a die-hard KOF fan and absolutely MUST have all the merchandise. Otherwise it isn't really worth it. I found it fun and interesting for a while and I am glad I tried it, but I definitely wouldn't buy it. Its far better to get some FAQ's for the games from the internet for free, many of those not only contain playing guides but info about the fighters too. As for the other sections they will only hold your interest for a short while, then you will get bored and probably never touch them again. Buy the real game instead; it makes more sense in my opinion. If you are a hardcore fan and you do speak Japanese then it might be for you, otherwise, steer clear of it.
