Review 2 - by Mayhem DK

Introduction:

After another two year wait, the third entry into the Art Of Fighting series was released, and for this installment SNK completely re-did everything from the ground up. Not only does it feature almost a totally new cast (apart from Robert/Ryo and a cameo from Yuri), but it also features totally re-worked gameplay.

Graphics & Sound:

During a review, I'd normally talk about the gameplay first, but the thing that will grab you initially when you play this game are the graphics. The characters and backgrounds are even more detailed than before and the character sprites in particular now have very, very slick animation! The animation was something that let the first two games down, but believe me when I say that they have really improved it for Art of Fighting 3; in fact it has some of the best you will see on the Neo Geo. Not until Mark of the Wolves did the Neo Geo ever get close to this level of smoothness, that's for sure.

Another thing that impressed me was the sound which has been much improved too. It's not my favourite soundtrack by far, not by a long way, but the funky jazz/rock here is a step up from some of the tunes that were annoying in AOF1 and AOF2. I did like a lot of the music in those games, but this is a definite improvement in my book.

Gameplay:

Now to the most important part: Game play. This area of the game has also been much improved from other games, although it is extremely different. In this one you get to choose from 10 characters, and as mentioned above they are all new to this game apart from Ryo and Robert. Once on the battlefield you will see quite a big difference. It actually seems to control a bit more like a 3D fighting game with it's small pre-set button combos, so this might not be a good thing for some people, but I do think that it is more interesting than the way the game was before. Fighting against the computer is more fun than before too as it doesn't seem to cheat as much as it used to and it certainly isn't as ridiculously hard as AOF2 was. Overall, it is much more satisfying to play than the first two, but there will be people out there that won't enjoy the way it has changed.

Overall:

This game is very good graphically, and gameplay wise I think it's a lot more polished and advanced than the previous two games, but some old school fans might want to carry on playing AOF2. Art Of Fighting 3 is a good game, although it does get overlooked because like the previous games in the series it's still not really the most solid and balanced 2D fighter around. It's good fun though, all the same.

I would have loved to see a new AOF game after this one, but it's unlikely to ever happen now... not on the Neo Geo anyway. If we never get one then I suppose we'll have to be happy with appearances from AOF characters in the KOF games.

Graphics: 9/10
Sound: 8/10
Game play: 7.5/10
Replay Value: 7/10

Overall Rating: 8/10
