Review Introduction:

After the slight disappointment that was World Heroes 2 Jet (not really much new), comes World Heroes Perfect which is definitely the best World Heroes game to date. Again, like WH2J, I didn't play this much in the arcade, only on a friends home Neo Geo console... but within a few minutes I could tell that quite a lot of things had been improved or added to this version, so here's a lowdown of what's new:


Gameplay:

Firstly, although the character selection is the same as WH2J, all the characters moves have once again been tweaked, and they also have new moves. The most important addition however, is the combo meter at the bottom of the screen. Once full you can perform super moves that take off lots of energy. You can also do desperation moves. These are performed when your energy bar starts flashing when it gets low enough. Quickly press a combination of buttons and you will do some fairly nasty come back moves that also take off a lot of energy. There is also more potential for some nice combos than there were in previous versions. Each character has there own super move that can be done by pressing A+B+C together.

This brings me to another improvement: the button layout. Finally, we now have two punch buttons and two kick buttons! A and B are for light and medium punches and C and D are for light and medium kicks. If you press either both punch or kick buttons you will do a hard punch or kick. This system seems to work much better than the controls in the first three games. You can still do the taunts/fake dizzy that you did in the in the last game though, instead of pressing C you now press B+C together. All of this may seem a little strange at first, but it doesn't take long to get used to it, and it does work a lot better than the previous controls, believe me.

I find that this game is has a more intelligent CPU than before, and can be quite a lot harder, although not so much as to be unfair. In fact this game seems better than WH2J in almost every way, but there is still one thing that annoys me. That is the LACK OF A DEATH MATCH MODE!!! I know that I have raved on about this feature in every World Heroes review (even though most people probably didn't like it that much), but it was one of the more unique features in the first two games, and they removed it in World Heroes 2 Jet. Oh well, at least the game engine has been improved way beyond the others... and that is what really counts!

Graphics and Sound:

Like pretty much everything else in this game, the graphics have had a bit of an overhaul. They now look better, with some great backgrounds and some slightly more detailed characters. There are some really nice details on them too, such as your characters head moving to always look at your opponent e.g. when your opponent jumps over you, your fighters head moves upwards to look at them. Each character also has there own Perfect victory poses, some of which look cool. The sound is probably the one area that isn't really any better, but it has never been World Heroes strong point and is not improved in this one either. Some stages do have some nice music, but overall it borders on annoying, which is a shame really.


Overall:

Basically, if you liked the first three incarnations of World Heroes, then you should definitely try this. It does suck that there is no Death Match mode, but it has been a long time since I have enjoyed playing a World Heroes game as much as this and I like it very much! It isn't "perfect" as the title would suggest, but it is the closest we will ever get to the ultimate World Heroes game, as I doubt they'll ever make another.
