Review Introduction:

Although I loved the first two World Heroes games in the arcade, I only ever got to play this at home, because none of my regular arcades had it for some reason when it first came out. I at first imagined that this was going to be a fairly straightforward update to World Heroes 2 (judging by the name), but quite a lot of things have changed. While World Heroes 2 Jet is a good game, I unfortunately don't think that all of the changes made are for the better...

Gameplay:

My first disappointment: NO DEATH MATCHES! One of my favourite parts of WH1 and WH2 were the DM matches but now they are gone. You still get to choose between two types of game though. The first choice is tournament mode where you pick your player and fight through a series of matches that consist of one round against 3 different fighters. Secondly, you get "Vs World Heroes" mode where you pick your player and from what I can tell you get to choose an opponent and after beating them, you choose another opponent and beat them. After a few fights (four, according to the FAQ below), you get a game over message and that's it! If you were playing this in the arcade I think you would be pretty pissed off that you wasted your money on four fights. There doesn't seem to be any more to this mode than that, although I haven't played this mode very much at all. Besides, I don't know why they would have put this mode in there anyway. Compared to the original and funny Death Matches this is just total rubbish as far as I am concerned.

Anyway, what about is the game improved otherwise? Well, yes and no. There are some improvements, such as the computer is not as stupid as it used to be, although a good player can still beat it easily, and the game seems a little faster too (which is a big plus point). Then there are all the usual tweaks to the characters moves and also some extra moves, although it is still not as well balanced as some other beat 'em ups that are out there. And there are of course a couple of extra fighters to play as. You now have Jack, who is a fighter from the U. K. and is a bit like Vega (Balrog in some countries) from Street Fighter, and also Ryofu who is from China.

Controls have been changed for this version. A+B are still used for Punching and kicking, and holding down the button still results in a stronger attack. Now though, instead of using the C button for throws, you now just press either A or B when you are up close to an opponent. The C button is now used for taunts, and if you hold down and press C you can fake being dizzy. This is quite a cool feature that can fool a second player into thinking they can run in and hit you, only for you to come out of the dizzy and beat the hell out of them! This quite obviously doesn't really work against the computer though. You can now dash towards or away from your opponent by tapping towards or away twice.

Graphics and Sound:

Graphically this is not a huge improvement on WH2, but still looks nice. The fighters and stages are fairly well detailed, but don't expect anything amazing. The same goes for the sound, which (apart from some good catchy music in places) has never been the World Heroes series strongest point, although the sound effects for punches and kicks have been improved.

Overall:

I would have really liked this game if they hadn't taken away the Death Matches and replaced it with what seems to be a very pointless mode. This game has got its faults although it is still improved from WH2 in some ways, but the fact that my favourite mode has been taken away takes out some of the enjoyment for me. I guess that not many other people played the game in that mode, so they decided to remove it.

Overall, World Heroes 2 Jet still a pretty good game and will mainly appeal to fans of the first two. You should give this game a try if you like the others, especially if you found the Death matches pointless. However I will carry on playing WH2 or the sequel World Heroes Perfect, which is probably the best in the series).
