Review Introduction:

I wasn't quite sure what to expect before I played this game, because I had never heard of it. After playing it though I am glad that I did! Waku Waku 7 has got to be one of the weirdest, crazy, most insane fighting games I've played on the Neo Geo (any system in fact) but its also one of the most fun!

One of the first things you will notice, and one of the best parts of WW7 is the selection of fighters. They are a great variety of manga/anime style characters (perhaps a little stereotypical too), and they range from people with big swords, to police robots (with more gadgets and weapons than James Bond's tool-belt), to big purple fluffy rabbit things (?) and also a boss character that is just a giant ball with a face called Fernandez (Yes, you heard right...) . Did I mention that Fenandez has a special move which involves eating you and then spitting you back out his rear with a certain smelly bodily function? Well, thats just the tip of the iceberg, as everything here is crazy and over the top and nothing in this game makes very much sense at all. That is part of the reason I have come to love Waku Waku 7 so much!

The game play is very good. I found that the controls are just right and it feels so satisfying to beat the crap out of your opponent once you start to master them. There are lots of little tactics that you use against your opponents, such as hitting them while they are on the floor and jumping up into an attack after being floored yourself. If you are hit by a powerful move you can sometimes make you character rebound of the wall and launch into a counter attack too. In addition you can use a wide variety of excellent special and super moves. For more details about them, check the FAQ's. This isn't the most well rounded fighter ever, but for all out fun it is great!

Graphics and Sound:

WW7 is quite good graphically. It is very colourful (perhaps a little TOO colourful in places) and has some very good quality animation. Some of the short character animations that play before and after a fight are quite amusing too. Some of the things that are said before and after a fight are quite funny too... Many of the endings left me in stiches I was laughing so hard! I was also very impressed with the sound. There are some nice sound effects and voices, but best of all is the rather excellent (and also totally mad in places) music, which is some of the best I have ever heard coming from the Neo Geo's sound chip. Two standout stages are Dandy-J's and Arina's. Arina's music actually has some singing in it which suprisingly doesn't sound too bad at all! When I first played this I was quite impressed, although a more recent game (Matrimelee has surpassed Waku Waku 7 in this area) .

Overall this is still arguably one of the Neo Geo's best ever moments musically!

Listen to the music from this game!

Introduction music
41 seconds, 709K. Intro movie music

The select screen music
48 seconds, 753K.This makes me laugh a lot. Listen to the WHOLE of it, the singer sounds quite mad!

Arina's stage
61 seconds, 973K. Cool piece of music, quite impressive for the Neo Geo because it has lots of singing in it!

Dandy-J's stage
65 seconds, 1048K. Another cool piece of music, suits Dandy J's stage well!

WW7 is great fun, but one problem I did find is that you can overuse the super moves. The super gauge builds up very quickly which means you canuse the big moves over and over, especially if you save all your energy from the first round and then let rip with everything you've got in the second round. There are also some REALLY big specials that you can do, which take a long time to charge up but are unblockable and take masses of energy, which can be annoying. Although this is a problem at times, it didnt ruin the game for me. I was too busy admiring the craziness of it all! I mean, how can you dislike a game that has a secret character called "Bonus Kun", who is a punch bag and definitely the FUNNIEST Ryu from Street Fighter parody seen? Take a look at the additional screenshots page! ;)

All in all I definitely recommend you try this game as it is one of the most enjoyable and funny fighters on Neo Geo and unless you have no sense of humour at all or really hate manga/anime, I don't think you will be disappointed.
