Review Introduction:

The first contact I had with this game was when I played the Playstation conversion, as I never had the benefit of playing it in the arcades when it was first released. 99% of Playstation conversions of Neo Geo games are not that good and the conversion of this game was no different. Although it had improved graphics, it suffered from some very bad slowdown from what I remember, which detracted from the gameplay considerably. Anyway, I decided that I would check out the REAL version of it to see what it was like.

Gameplay:

This is basically a bog standard (in my opinion) shoot em up with one main difference, which is quite literally the Viewpoint (hence the name I guess)! You actually travel diagonally up the screen instead of vertically or horizontally. This makes getting used to the game quite difficult. The main problem is that it can be very hard to judge where to position your craft to avoid getting hit. After a while you do get used to it, but it can still be still annoying. Apart from that, all you do is shoot down enemy craft after enemy craft. You also get a a power up which gives you two little pods on either side of the ship which fire laser beams. If you get hit you lose them. Also, you can charge the ships laser beam up by holding the fire button for a more powerful burst.

Graphics & Sound:

The graphics here are quite good for the time, but obviously don't look amazing. As far as I remember, the Playstation version had slightly improved graphics but because of the slowdown in that I prefer this version. It still looks cool in a retro kind of way though. One feature that I thought was outstanding for the most part though was the sound. The Sound FX are the usual shoot em up noises, but the music is good. It is techno style and suits the game very well; it is one of its best features in my opinion, and quite impressive considering how small the Viewpoint cart is.

Overall:

I would have to use the old cliche "First impressions last" for this game overall. I didn't like the Playstation version that much and playing the superior original hasn't really changed my mind that much. Maybe if I played the Neo Geo version first I would have liked it more. I know a few people that say that this is a classic, but for me it is just another average shoot 'em up.

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 8/10
Game play: 6/10
Replay Value: 5/10

Overall Rating: 6/10
