Review Introduction:

This game really does take me back to the good old days of the Amiga. I remember back in those days I used to play lots of top down racing games, classics such as Super Cars and Roadkill. When I saw this game, I thought it looked pretty cool so I decided to get it. Unfortunately it turned out that this game should be called "Trash Rally" instead of "Thrash Rally".

Gameplay:

This is not the worst game in the world, but I really do not like this it that much. When I first put it on, I thought it was O.K., but about five minutes later I realised that it just wasn't all that enjoyable to play. There are quite a few faults in it, things such as the fact that your car doesn't seem to be able to turn in the right direction, when driving down some diagonal stretches of road. This means that you have to keep tapping left then right to keep your car on the road. Also, when you hit another car you just go straight through them instead of crashing out. This is pretty stupid, especially when you choose the Motorbike! There are one or two nice touches in the game, like being able to choose vehicles like the aforementioned motorbike, a buggy and also a truck. You get to choose between two different races to enter, either the World Rally Championship or The Dakar Paris Rally. You can only select your vehicle from the normal cars when you enter the World Rally Championship and not the Motorbike or truck.

Graphics & Sound:

It is not too hot graphically either. In all fairness, no top down racing game is going to look fantastic, so that doesn't really bother me. There are some decent things though, like the birds scattering when you hit a tree and also the way that the camera zooms in and out sometimes. There is one kinda sick touch as well. On certain parts of the tracks there are sometimes animals such as buffalo or elephants that you can run over. This isn't very nice (hehe) and it also looks rather stupid. I mean, if a car was to hit an elephant, would the elephant just fall over and die while the car carries on going? Don't think so. If you think that sounds stupid, then what about a motorbike hitting an elephant and carrying straight on? Oh well, video games wouldn't be any fun if they were totally realistic! :)

As far as sound goes, not to put to fine a point on it... it sucks. There's nothing really unexpected or particularly good as far as sound effects go (apart from the elephants that I mentioned earlier trumpeting when they get hit) and the music is fairly sub standard too. Nothing even remotely special, or even particularly good.

Overall:

When this game was first released I probably would have liked it, but nowadays I just can't really forgive the flaws in it. Even in this day and age of games like Gran Turismo etc, I still enjoy playing top down racers a great deal, but I have played much better games in the genre than this one. I would have to say give this one a miss and go try Neo Drift Out or Overtop if you want a great racing game for your Neo Geo.
