Review Introduction:

I was not overly impressed with Super Sidekicks 3 because it wasn't much different to Super Sidekicks 2 and I was not expecting this to be any different. When I got to play it though, I was pleasantly surprised. Super Sidekicks 4 isn't massively different to the last game, but it is a football game so I didn't expect it to be. However it is a nice (and more worthy) update to the last few games.

There are a few new options in this version. First off, you now get four options to choose from at the start of the game, which affect how your team plays. You can select from balanced mode which gives you a well rounded team, Offensive or Defensive, which makes your team good in those respective areas. Finally there is “technical” which gives individual players good strength but is harder to use. For this reason, it is best left for expert players. There are now only two different leagues to pick from. The first is the World Cup, which is the standard mode and the second is “SNK-Championship” which allows you to pick the teams you play against.

Thankfully the changes don't end at the options either. Once in game you will notice some other changes. For a start you no longer get the close up camera angle where you aim a cross hair at the goal when you take a shot. Instead, the camera changes and you take your shot from a far off angle (see above screen shot). This is a little disorientating, I did get used to it. The controls in this game seem a little more fluid too. Crossing the ball across to a teammate and watching them volley or bicycle kick it into the back of the net from outside the penalty area is great fun, as it should be! The more vicious players among you out there should take not though; the referee seems to like handing out more free kicks and red/yellow card in this one, so frequent shoulder barges are not a good idea!

Graphics & Sound:

Game play isn't the only thing that has changed. The graphics look a fair bit better than before. The players are a bit bigger and more detailed and they also seem to move a little faster and smoother than before. The best thing about the graphics is once again the presentation though. From the intro screens, to the animation's you get after scoring or fouling, this game oozes class. The presentation was good before, but in this one it is even better. It is probably the best that the Neo Geo could handle for this type of game. Overall, very good. Once again I can't say much about the sound, so I am not even going to try. If you have played any other football game ever then you know what to expect.

This game is very good. It is easily the best game in the Super Sidekicks Series in my humble opinion. I wasn't really expecting too much from it but I ended up playing it quite a lot, particularly in two-player mode, which is especially good fun.

Like the name implies, the "Ultimate" Sidekicks game! However you may end up having to pay the "ultimate" price too if you want to buy this game on home cartridge format... it does tend to be mroe than a bit expensive! In fact, the last I heard about it, one of the home carts sold for $8000! So, MVS is the way to go with this one if you can ;)
