Review Introduction:

Another Super Sidekicks sequel. From what I have played of this game, there really isn't that much new at all. In fact, apart from new presentation screens and the addition of some new tournaments to play I don't think there is much new that is of note, other than a few tweaks here and there and some slightly improved graphics.

Gameplay:

The computer in this version doesn't seem to be as hard as it was in Super Sidekicks 2. The CPU players don't to try to foul you as much and maybe it's just me but the goalkeepers also seem much easier to beat this time around. There are a few different leagues that you can play in, but they don't really add anything either; it just lets you choose which teams you play against.

Graphics & Sound:

The graphics are also mostly the same as they were in the last game too: i.e. a big improvement on Super Sidekicks 1. They don't really seem that different to the last version though, apart from the new presentation and team selection screens. Don't get me wrong they are quite decent, but there has been no real attempt to enhance them. Then again it's hard to see how much further they could take this type of game on the Neo Geo...

I'm not going to attempt to say much about the sound either. You probably already know what to expect because this is a football game. The music from the menu screens is good but that is about all.

Overall:

At the end of the day, almost all sports game series' follow the same route. The company that makes them releases the first version and then year after year it just releases updates that fix minor bugs or add small additional features, basically to cash in and this game is no different. The same complaint could be directed towards many beat ‘em ups, but I think that sports games are way more guilty of this. I suppose Super Sidekicks isn't as bad as EA's FIFA series though ;)

It isn't that I don't like this game, rather that if I was considering buying it and already owned Super Sidekicks I would probably decide against it. I'd much rather go out and spend my money on something else, or perhaps even Super Sidekicks 4. Obviously this game was meant for the arcade and it is worth putting a few credits into the game there, but because it is only a marginal improvement, I wouldn't purchase it myself.

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 7/10
Game play: 7.5/10
Replay Value: 6/10

Overall Rating: 7/10

For me one of the key improvements made between this and SS2 is the player select function. I found in SS2 when you pushed C to change player it did not always choose the most logical person. In SS3 this is much improved IMO.
