Review Introduction:

A couple of years after the first Sidekicks game a sequel arrived. Like most football games, there isn't really much new in Super Sidekicks 2 (there is only so much you can do with a football game right?), although there were some changes, which made this game better than the previous one.

Gameplay:

Firstly, the controls are much improved in this game. 3 buttons instead of 2 are now used; when in possession of the ball the A button is used for shooting and low passes, the B button is used for high passes and C is used to kick the ball a short distance in front of you. When defending, A is used for slide tackles and B is used for shoulder barging other players. In the first game your player was selected automatically, which was one of my main problems with it, but in this game they are selected manually. When not in possession of the ball, pressing C will change your selected player to the one closest to the ball. I think that this method is far better than automatic selection.

Another new feature you will notice is the close up views that you occasionally get when you are about to take a shot at goal… sometimes the camera angle changes so that you are looking directly at the goal (see the above screen shot). You then have a couple of seconds to aim a cross hair at the goal and then press your button to shoot. Many people don't like this method and find it obtrusive. Personally I would prefer to take the shot normally, but you do get used to it after a while and besides, it doesn't happen all that often anyway.

Graphics:

The graphics are suitably improved in this version. They look more detailed, are faster, and the animation seems to be maybe a little bit better. The presentation is better than in the first game too, with lots of nice animations for when you score or get fouled etc.

Sound effects & Music:

The sound in SS2 is basically the usual football stuff. Unlike Super Sidekicks there is now no music at all when in game, the only background noise is the crowd cheering. The music that you do get when in the menu screens is quite good though. Overall it's not great but it suits the game well enough.

Overall:

This is a worthy sequel to the original Super Sidekicks. Being a football game this shouldn't really be treated as a sequel really, just an upgrade. As an upgrade it is good, so give it a try if you liked the first game.

Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 7/10
Game play: 7/10
Replay Value: 7/10

Overall Rating: 6.5/10
