Review Introduction:

Dodge Ball is a strange idea for a game. I didn't think that it would be all that much fun, in fact I wasn't expecting this game to be much good at all. But when I got to play it I was surprised at how much fun it actually was.

Gameplay:

The basic idea is that you pick a team of three people. The stages are divided into two halves and each team has their own half that they stay in. You have to fight for possession of the ball and when you get it you throw it at your opponents to take off their energy. You can either throw it straight at them or use beat 'em up style special moves to hit them, which you execute using different button combinations. Each player on a team has their own energy bar and once it is empty they are out of the game. Once all three of your opponents players have been knocked out the game is won. However, when a player is knocked out, they still remain at the edges of the arena and can still have the ball passed to them. As you progress through the game, you also get the option of making your opponents join your team after you have beat them.

This game is very easy to just pick up and play. Controls are very simple: The A button is for throwing the ball at your enemy, B is for passing to your team-mates and C makes you jump. If you press the A button when the ball is coming towards you, your player will catch it without taking any damage, unless a special attack is used, in which case you taker minor damage, so it is really a matter of timing. You can sometimes counter your opponents attacks if you hit a certain button combination at the right time, which sends the ball flying back at them, causing damage. If you press in a direction twice it makes you run. You can use this to charge straight into your opponents half of the arena, but once you stop running you drop the ball and get pulled back.

Graphics:

This is quite a nice game to look at. The graphics are not absolutely outstanding or amazingly animated, but they do look very nice. There are lots of different effects for when you perform the special moves which look fairly cool. There are also a fair amount of different stages to fight on which all look very good and the presentation of the game is not too bad either.

Sound effects & Music:

One thing that did impress me was the music. I was quite surprised that pretty much all of the music here was very good. It suits the game well. The sound effects are also well done, with plenty of speech and some nice sound FX.

Overall:

When you think about it, this is really a different twist on the fighting game genre. It probably isn't the sort of game that you would spend too much time playing, as it can get a little repetitive. It is still quite good fun for a limited amount of time though and is definitely something you should should check out for a change from the usual style of beat 'em up. However, due to the very high price for this game on MVS (no home cart was released either), it isn't really a must have game, unless you are looking to complete your collection... or Dodge Ball really is your type of thing :)
