Review Introduction:

This can be best described as a NBA Jam clone, but with 6 players on court. I have to say, when I first saw this game, I thought it would really suck. After playing it though, I realised that while not being the best game ever on Neo Geo, it wasn't really all that bad at all...

Gameplay:

If you have played NBA Jam, then you know what to expect. In Street Hoops however, you have 3 players on each team instead of 2. You get to pick from a selection of different teams (none of them real, unlike NBA Jam as this is street basketball) and all have varying statistics. From then on you just have to score more baskets than your opponents to win (obviously). That sounds easy in theory, but is actually a lot harder than you might expect.

After playing this game for about an hour, I could quickly see the main fault with it; it's just too damn hard in my opinion. I managed to win a few games, but the one thing that really annoyed the hell out of me was that if you are lagging behind your opponents at the end of each half (yes it's played in halves instead of quarters), or even if you are on equal points then it is game over! I know that the same usually happens in NBA Jam too, but the CPU in this game has an even more annoying habit of scoring a fluky three-pointer right at the end of a half! The simple fact is that the court is quite small meaning that you can run from one end to the other very quickly, which leaves you with less time to try and steal the ball from your opponents. Something that makes up for this is that you don't need to worry about breaking the rules, as there aren't many at all; pushing, shoving and generally getting into your opponents face among many other things are all permitted… NBA Jam had very few rules, and this has even less! :)

If you have played NBA Jam, then you'll get the hang of the controls very easily. The A button is used to shoot and dunk, or to block the ball when your opponent shoots, and the B button is used to pass and to steal the ball. The same little tricks in NBA Jam work too, like jumping to shoot, and then quickly pressing pass to send the ball to a teammate. As I said, this is really just a Neo version of the aforementioned game. The only thing missing is a run button; this would have been helpful, but you get used to it. It would have also been nice to have some more spectacular dunks. Most dunks are pretty standard ones, although there is a meter at the bottom of the screen that gets charged up every time you score; if this reaches full you can pull off some quite impressive dunks, but it is a shame that they don't happen more often.

Graphics & Sound:

The graphics Street Hoops are fairly standard and look similar to most of the sports games on the Neo Geo, but they do their job quite well though and are very colourful. There are also different courts to play in, which is a nice touch. The rap music in this game during the menu screens and in game is quite funky too, and there is a lot of singing in it, which is quite cool in a Neo Geo game, even if it is a little repetitive at times. There's a lot of in game speech in the way of commentary too, most of which will sound a little familiar if you played NBA Jam. ("FROM DOWNTOWN!")

Overall:

If you like NBA Jam or are into Basketball in general, then you are probably going to like this, at least a little. In my opinion it isn't as good as Jam because of its niggling faults, but mainly because the CPU can be annoyingly hard at times. In two-player mode it is great fun though. Give it a try, as overall it is one of the better Neo Geo sports games out there!
