Review Introduction:

Before I played this game, I had read a couple of reviews that said it was “god-awful”. When I came to play it, I really wasn't expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised when I found a game that was nowhere near as bad as I thought. Fair enough, Savage Reign is definitely not one of the best beat 'em ups around on the Neo Geo, but it is far from the worst (Ragnagard or Fight Fever anyone?).

Gameplay:

In a similar way to Fatal Fury, battles in this game are fought on two separate planes. However, in this game they do make a big difference to the game play. For example, on Nicola's stage there is a platform at the top of the screen that you can jump up to. In the middle of this platform there is a gap that opens and closes, so if you are standing on it you have to be ready to jump off when you are warned it is going to open, or you will fall and receive some damage. On Eagles stage, the other plane of battle is a railing at the top of the screen. Along the rail there are spotlights that you can kick off to hit your opponent with. And on Carol's fairground stage, there is a track that has cars running along it. No prizes for guessing what happens if you stay on the track for too long! Little touches like this are cool and make the two planes of battle fun to use.

Graphics:

The graphics are fairly average unfortunately. The fighters themselves are quite big and look OK and so is the animation, but it isn't really the best ever seen on this system. The character design isn't brilliant either and most of the fighters look a little stupid (The Joker/King Lion!). Most of the backgrounds aren't all that bad with a fair amount of detail on them, but once again they are nothing special.

Sound effects & Music:

The sound in this game is fairly rubbish though. None of the special effects or character voices are all that good and the music isn't any better and can get incredibly aggravating in places. In fact, about five minutes after playing the game you will have totally forgotten what it sounded like, that's how unremarkable it is.

Overall:

I found this game fun for a while, but I soon got fed up with the fact that it doesn't play anywhere near as good as games like The King of Fighters, Fatal Fury and many others. All I could think about while I was playing it was that I could really be playing something better in my spare time!

Overall, Savage is far from being as terrible as many people suggest. It does actually play OK, but it does get boring very quickly. The computer can be quite cheap to play against too, which means it is frustrating in one-player mode sometimes. It is still worth checking out, however the sequel “Kizuna Encounter” is a billion times better so you may want to check that out instead (recommended).

Sound: 5/10

Replay Value: 5/10

Overall Rating: 6/10
