Introduction:

At the current time, I have just finished writing reviews of some other fairly bland shoot 'em ups like Andro Dunos, so I am getting quite tired of them now. This game didn't really do anything to get my interest back. Its just an average shooter that is set in space and has a very dated eighties feel to it. Although I'm a fan of some 80's shooters, like R-Type, I didn't like Alpha Mission much.

Gameplay:

At the start of the game you get to choose between two types of control method, which alter the way you fire slightly, and then you... yeah you guessed it; keep hammering your fire button to shoot down horde after horde of enemy craft. There is nothing in it to really keep your interest for more than 20 minutes, which makes it a good game to play in the arcade to pass some time but nothing else. Uninspiring to say the least.

Graphics & Sound:

The graphics are fairly dated and not up to the usual Neo Geo standard in my opinion. They aren't horrendous or anything, it's just that they look the same as pretty much any other 16-bit shooter from this time period. The sound shares this same quality (or lack of); it suits the game, but is far from amazing, even for an older game like this.

Overall:

Alpha Mission 2 falls into the same category as many other shoot 'em ups on the Neo Geo; kind of fun to play, but if you want to play a REALLY good shoot 'em up then try Blazing Star or Pulstar, or even The Last Resort as they are *far* superior! If you want a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up then try Aero Fighter 2/3!

Graphics: 6/10
Sound: 6/10
Game play: 5/10
Replay Value: 4/10

Overall Rating: 5/10

The AF games are better choices than this game when it comes to vertically scrolling shooters!

I think its a good game and deserving of a better score its not as though the Neo Geo is over flowing with shooters Smile
