Review 2 - by Mr Man

Review Introduction:

Here we go: here is the seventh instalment in the Fatal Fury series. This game is basically an update to Real Bout Fatal Fury Special in the same way that Fatal Fury Special was to Fatal Fury 2. This basically means a few more characters, such as Li Xiangfei (who really reminds me of Ling Xiaoyu from Tekken 3). There are also a few new stages although most of them are the same as in Real Bout Fatal Fury Special.

Gameplay:

There are one or two minor differences to the game play though, the first one you will probably notice is that there are no barriers to be broken in the corner of each stage like in Real Bout 1 and Real Bout Special. It doesn't make a whole lot of difference but I wish they were still there because I thought they were cool. To be honest not much else has really changed in the game play department apart from that, other than a few minor tweaks to certain moves, etc.

Graphics & Sound:

Graphically it is mostly the same as the previous game, with excellently drawn characters and backdrops, but the presentation screens are considerably better though with some great artwork. Some of the stages are exactly the same, but some have been altered very slightly since RBFFS. Most of the music has been re-used in this version too, but that is not a bad thing as the music was probably the best that there has ever been in a Fatal Fury game so far.

Overall:

There isn't really anything else to say that I haven't already mentioned. As I said before it's just an updated version. Because Real Bout Fatal Fury Special was very good anyway, this game is still excellent. However I think I just about prefer the Special... its not that this game is really any worse, just my own personal opinion. I know that there are people out that disagree with me, but it's all down to personal taste.

The next Fatal Fury game after this one is called Wild Ambition and runs on different arcade hardware (also available to buy for the PSX). Its actually 3D instead of 2D and is also nowhere near as good as most of the 2D games. Fear not though, there is another new 2D Fatal Fury after this one which is for the Neo Geo, called "Mark of the Wolves". Read the review by clicking the link below.
