Review Introduction:

Well, this is the sixth instalment in the Fatal Fury Series! There have been a fair few alterations and improvements since Real Bout Fatal Fury 1 hit the arcades, and these help towards making this game one of my favourites in the series!

Gameplay:

First of all, the planes of movement have been changed again and are reduced from 3 back to 2. The ring outs have also been removed, which may please a few people who didn't like them (I didn't mind them personally). This time, when you pummel your opponent into the objects at the end of each stage, instead of breaking and sending your opponent out of the arena, they get dazed for a short time. Also some moves that were way too powerful in the previous version (see the review of RBFF1) have been removed or tweaked. The choice of characters has been boosted too, and if you are playing the home version, not the arcade version, there are alternate shadow versions of some characters that you can play as, see the FAQ for more details).

Graphics & Sound:

Apart from the above changes the game is pretty much what you would expect. The graphics are the same, slightly more “cartoony” style to the fighters as Real Bout 1, and they look excellent with good animation to back them up. The backgrounds also look very nice, and this time we get different stages for almost everyone. Although I didn't like the music in the last two Fatal Fury games much, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special has some excellent music on many of these stages, in particular Mai's stage (If you have read my other FF reviews you probably guessed that I like Mai a lot :)

Overall:

I know some people that were a little disappointed at a few of the above changes between this and the first Real Bout game, but on the other hand many people were happy with them, particularly the ring outs. They looked cool, but one school of thought said that they were pointless and made the game cheap, as all you needed to do was corner someone and pummel them hard enough to knock them over the edge. Personally I don't mind at all, perhaps because I played this version before I even saw RBFF1. Even though I love the ring outs because they were fun, I think it's nice for the two games to be different.

Regardless of the difference in people's opinions this is an excellent addition the Fatal Fury Series and probably the best version in my humble opinion, even if others may disagree. Oh, here's one last thing that is worthy of a mention. There are some cool ending credits after you complete the game, so be sure to sit back and watch! Some of them are hilarious and had me in stitches, but then again, maybe that's just my lame sense of humor acting up :)
