I've heard about it alright in a video that THX showed me. It looks like a lot of fun!

I'm a big fan of 2D shooters so again the Neo is a superb system for me to own. Only thing is though the price of the big three - Pulstar, Blazing Star and The Last Resort. When I get my MVS/AES converter then I should be able to pick them up at some point within the near future.

After I get those I might hunt down Twinkle Star Sprites and find out for myself what all the fuss is about :)

I own:

94
96
(98's in the post!)
2000
2001
2002
XI
MI
NeoWave

Out of that list my favourite is 2002. For me its suitably old school but its got a great dose of complexity as well. 2000 is up there too very close behind '02.

XI is probably the best in the series technically as it looks stunning and has the deepest gameplay. However, it feels very modern and perhaps the Dream Cancel system isn't as well developed as it could have been. Still, I love it very much, but it lacks the classic KOF 'feel' and atmosphere present in 2000 and 2002, so the nod goes their way :)

My favourite Neo Geo AES game is The Last Blade. Mind you, I have yet to play KOF '98, Blazing Star, Last Blade 2 or Mark of the Wolves, so expect that, admittedly fine choice, to change at some point in the future!

Hello, and welcome to NeoGeoForLife, Mr Vengeance! :)

Glad you decided to get into SNK. But they're not all about fighting games! Try Twinkle Star Sprites when you can! You won't regret it. ^_^

Nice to see people talking favourably about the Maximum Impact sub-series - its always been a guilty pleasure of mine :)
hey guys which ps2 game do u recomend

kof XI - 30 $
kof neowawe -25 $
kof MI 1 - 22$
kof MI 2 - 25 $

10Q in advance
King of Fighters XI is a masterpiece, so I'd go for that. Its got beautiful graphics, loads of characters and ocean depth to its gameplay - I love the Dream Cancels!

Be warned though, the final boss is insanely tough, so if you do buy it, go into the game settings and change the game mode from 'arcade' to 'arrange' - makes the final boss less cheap and actually beatable!
merlin wrote:
Garu I don't own any of those games but hopefully someone else can help you out.

@Kurisu Congrats on getting Robo Army. I really like the game. It's very enjoyable.
Mr Vengeance wrote:
Threw on World Heroes Anthology next and played them in chronological order. WH was... pretty poor. Sure its a very old fighter, but the art design was very bland even for its day, plus I just gave up after the third fight as the Bruce Lee rip-off guy had constant move priority on me :( I'll play it again for sure, and I wasn't expecting much so.... no harm done.

Put in WH2 next and it looked an awful lot better, and the controls were definately improved. Still not really up to Street Fighter II standard let alone the better SNK fighters but fun all the same. And it got better from there on. The games have an interesting art direction, very unique if not that nice in my opinion, but the gameplay is good if not earth shattering. I'll play on a bit more and report back, but the series isn't that famous for a reason I guess, its just not as good the competition. And what competition it had on the Neo Geo.... :D
The World Heroes series definitely doesn't appeal to everyone. It's good to see you are getting some enjoyment out of them Mr Vengeance. I know the first one seems really dated now but I can remember this being quite popular in the arcades back in the day. I still love it and it was the reason why I bought an AES in the first place. The whole World Heroes series is brilliant in my opinion with World Heroes 2 being my favourite.

I feel the WH games are very underrated and are seen as being a bit substandard by some people. I actually prefer World Heroes over Street Fighter 2 which might seem a bit crazy I know but I can't help the way I feel. The games are often described as SF2 rip offs but I feel in the character designs and gameplay (including of course the death match mode) there is real originality. I love the colourful graphics, character designs and the music too.
Well I'm an open minded gamer and will play it again soon and give it some more time. My initial impressions of the series were only so-so, but I'm sure I'll get some enjoyment out of the disc as the series has its fans as you say.

Hello Kaz! Well I must say XI really is one of my favorites, I play it SO MUCH ( I beat Magaki at Difficulty 8 with 1 character, I want to make a youtube video out of it to show you guys my tricks! )
Wow!!

... Y-You're very good! I have trouble even in the arranged setting! (Do you fight Magaki in Arcade or Arranged settings?) Any team your fond of using?

Ah, welcome to NeoGeoForLife, by the way! Glad to meet a fellow KOF:MI fan! :3 (its so underrated...)

Kurisu: I used to love Rage Racer, it was one of my favourite PSOne games... me and my friends used to play it so much!

Finished PoP yet phry? I got through it pretty quickly, it's a great game although the ending is annoying... wonder when we'll see the sequel, lol! There's more I could say but I don't want to spil it for others that plan on playing it!

Still need to play some more Mirrors Egse when I get time for it! About halfway through now. At least in PoP though you don't have to hear the horrible crumple of broken bones if you fall seeing as you can never die! ;)

What I think about the older KOF? Well I was expecting something great from the Orochi saga, and I am more than satisfied, KOF94 is completly insane! I can't believe how those old KOF games are fun, and the OST is awesome for an classic fighting game. I don't really have any favorites from the Orochi Saga, because I love them all so much! I play them all everyday! when I saw that the Orochi Saga was announced, I couldn't believe it.

And thanks to all of you !
I'd love to see that vid if you manage to make one, you should do it and let me add it to the YouTube page! ;) I have trouble with Magaki, but then again I'm not the greatest of KOF playeres, especially not anymore now that I don't have a lot of competition around these parts. The only time I get the chance to practice is playing online via an emulator but it's not always the best due to lag.

Glad you like KOF '94 - I really do think it's a game that has stood the test of time and considering that it's 14 years old it is still brilliant, along with many other odler SNK games!
merlin wrote:
It's hard to talk about Fatal Fury 2 without immediately comparing it to Fatal Fury Special. Fatal Fury 2 is certainly a great game and a very important part of Snk's history but to be honest I feel no desire to play it any more. I'd rather just play FFS. FF2 was the cheapest AES cart I ever bought at £8 boxed with manual and as a Fatal Fury fan it was an essential purchase for me but I never play it any more.

I know I've said this loads of times in these forums already but that last battle against Krauser is just one of the most special moments you can have playing a Neo Geo game. It's the way the view pans down from the vaulted ceiling in Krauser's mansion, the fact that Krauser speaks to you 'I'll chisel your gravestone sleep well', an orchestra playing part of Mozart's requiem, lightning in the background and the fact that Krauser's sprite looks huge. The atmosphere is incredible definitely one of the greatest boss encounters I've ever experienced.

I agree Will about the bonus rounds. I've always enjoyed them ever since the days of smashing up that car and those barrels in Street Fighter 2. I often wonder why bonus rounds went out of fashion. It provided a bit of variety when you could relax a bit between bouts.
Absolutely agreed on all of that. Krausers stage gets mentioned all the time by SNK fans anyway as it's still one of the best boss encounters ever. Although I guess it's just a comparitively low quality audio sample that is playing, I was blown away hearing that music coming from the Neo Geo the first time I got there and that music suited it so well... it just made it feel epic! It was also very satisfying to beat Krauser for the first time because he's not exactly a pushover!

This is one thing that really annoys me about all beat 'em ups these days. Why don't characters have specific stages anymore? I've said it before but it's true; for me, when each character has their own specific stage and stage music that suits their personality, it adds so much in the way of atmosphere. Now for the most part, all fighting games seem to have a random stage for whoever you are fighting against (KOF included) and it just ruins a little bit of the atmosphere for me. Does that make sense to anyone else? Can you imagine if the final fight against Krauser was just on a random stage with different music. It would be the same fight, but it wouldn't have seemed as special.

I agree on the bonus rounds thing too, they were always fun and in the arcades you know you weren't going to lose out if you didn't do too well so getting to them kind of extended your playtime a bit, plus they were fun as hell in 2 player. I can still remember all the tactics people had for beating up the Lexus in SF2 back in the day, when at the end of the day there was no magical tactic that would destroy it any quicker. :) I still hate the fact that SF2 HD doesn't have the bonus rounds included, I really wish they'd put them in...
