How do I get started with Neo Geo?
ying
Hi folks!
Writing from Stockholm, Sweden. I am looking to get into Neo Geo again after 20+ years.
I had an AES back in 1991. Big mistake: I sold it around 1993, two arcade sticks, games and all... I didn´t even get a whole lot of money for it back then, bah!

But I wonder which way to go. I understand that there are many thorny paths these days, from AES to CD to MVS to CMVS to Supergun.

How do I find my way in this dense, uncharted jungle?

Hi Ying. I'm impressed you had an AES back then, was only a dream for me to own one in 1991! Prices are really high right now, and not sure they will drop. Only way I see them dropping is if someone starts releasing perfect repros of every game for a (relatively) low price. Which probably will happen eventually but not for a while

I started with an AES and a MVS convertor. Then I started buying the games on AES that I found myself playing a lot on MVS. For me that was MOTW and Waku Waku 7 (at that time). Some AES games are low price still - so snap them up fast if you want them. Samura Shodown 1, Fatal Fury, and some of the KOF games for example

There's an expensive convertor now that plays every MVS game perfectly (including multicarts, and NGDevTeam games) called the Daedulus converter. A cheaper option would be one of the Super MVS converters, which play *most* games perfectly.

If you want to go the AES route that's the best way because AES games cost so much now you can only really afford to buy one every now and again. So start off buying the games on MVS first.

-------------------------------------

However...probably the most sensible choice is to go totally with MVS and get a CMVS or why not get a MVS Arcade cabinet? Other people here can tell you about that. Sadly I don't have one myself. I would love one though!

Hope you can get back into Neo Geo again Thumbs Up

Ah thanks a lot RIKo! Interesting thoughts, I have to ponder them.
So a Daedulus converter is used with an AES then?

Around where would be an okay price for a european or japanese AES?

Deep pockets. Id would only buy the games you like , if your Pokemon like collecting you be living off pot noodles forever

No Problem Smile

Yes you plug the Daedulus converter into the AES, then your MVS game into the convertor. Some of the other convertors have issues with not showing sprite scaling correctly. I did have a Super MVS 2 convertor for about 4 years first and was pretty happy with it overall, even though that does have the scaling glitches.

On AES pricing, A lot depends if the console is boxed, how good condition it is, whether it has controllers etc. I bought mine years ago from Ebay so have no idea on price now. Best thing is to monitor prices on EBay to get an an idea of what they go for.

Great info, many thanks!
Had an offer for a euro aes for £260 but it seems to have gone now.
Good to know about the converters.
Prices seem to be all over the place :/
