Starwars: The Last Tie Fighter

Developing a game for my son thought id share here https://www.youtu...dM0Rhi5fFA Only uploaded the menu so far gameplay to follow .

Experimenting with Isometric/3d/2d Vertical & horizontal all in one game.

Good to see you Vas and great work on the game so far. Like the menu, looks and sounds good Thumbs Up.

Especially like the idea of an isometric game. Will it be a schmup? or a more strategic game?

Well since i posted this up i have tried 3d and isometric , but it just feel's odd in iso mode i just cannot get the right angle (working with 3dmodel's) Horizontal was a big flop because i'am a douche and didn't realize a tie fighter sideways just looks like a satellite dish especially in 2d Dog

I have to work to my basic principle that the controls and game play must be really simple but rewarding. As the game is only being designed with one person in mind my son and because of his disability the controls me be really easy to play with with, I only have left right forward and back bomb and shoot. looks promising That pic shows x4 the native neo resolution in the center and everything in black is the new play area, as in new space for sprites 1080p for hd screens with a filter but should scale all the way down to native neo resolution nice for crt tvs that need no filter you simply turn the filter off.

Wonderful idea Vas to create something only for your son. Please keep us updated, but no rush! Take your time to figure and work it out.

Could you explain some more about his disability? He isn't able to play a game the 'normal way'?

[img][/img]He has cerebral palsy bro, it affects his body movements in fairness he quite good with a controller is just games tend to be hard even on easy for him due to his reaction time. There is honestly no game's designed around disability's i am totally shocked. Due to the new tech available hopefully that change in the future but it's all just learning for me

i am not claiming i am a programming whiz i find it very hard if i am honest but i keep going. Smile

haha - oh yes!

I've always wanted to make an isometric game but it woud be totally new to me to do that viewpoint, so would probably be a bit crap Smile

Keep up the good work with your game. I couldn't get get the Tie.exe file to download despite clicking on it like crazy! but I like your metal slug inspired game. It's about time a one-man-army defeated those Isis terrorists once and for all!

I wasn't really disabled but I injured both my arms once and I remember trying to play Mario Kart (SNES) with my feet. (I got desperate!) I could drive round the circuit but it was really tiring and I wasn't competitive. I really missed video games then:( Hope you can make a game your son enjoys Vas Thumbs Up

Thank's mate, I figured how to do isometric view now. I may have to revert some code as i am using Ridgid body's atm (Weight & Force based) i have have to go simple to use iso as the laser's ricochet and can kill the player too.

He's playing the pronto atm going good a few adjustment's and i can get some proper art in there he has a ms paint art as background lol.

Almost finished the isis sprite sheet a few sprite edits to different colours and i am good to go.

As for the link it do work i checked it did you try clicking here attched pic ?

I hope you washed your controller afterwards Pfft

I've got your game files now but my Win Zip needs replacing. (it won't extract them. gah!) I'm just going away on a little holiday but look forward to giving it a whirl when I back with my laptop.

Nice work Vas ClapYes sometimes you have to cut out all the physics stuff to make a good game. I have bad memories of trying to make a retro 2D platformer with a physics engine. You sound like you now what you are doing. Keep up the good work. Hardest part is finishing a game (I never manage it!)

Time is my biggest issue really. I am using unity3d but it's 2d capable.

I haven't finished a game I got close and could have but tbh it was shit , basically and infinite runner dodging objects you earned points by distance then unlock a new player/ship/ plane form an In game shop but yeah how boring is that.
I am using the same concept with the starwars thing moving the world and not the player tiles spawn just off screen then scroll past the tie fighter, the tiles have enemy's positioned allready so you just make as many tiles you want , then spawn them in any sequence you want.

You should give unity a try and if your capable with 2d stuff we could help each other I am not experianced with 2d at all. I finished my basic's hero animations sprite's maybe you could look over them for me...

I am hoping to create a story driven slug/snatcher (mega cd) with some stealth elements so not just blasting and Set in the Middle East.

As for the files it's need win rar lol I just thought everyone had it , it do work I tested it Pray .

Got it working now. Looking and sounding awesome Vas Thumbs Up I like the Tie Fighter model especially. Looks very detailed! Hope you can make it into a game now.

Sure I will look at them for you. I'm a terrible artist myself but I can usually tell if something looks good or not Smile

Well I can write 2D games but very dodgy ones Smile I know most of the techniques though if you want any info. If you are using Unity you can probably do it in a much simpler way because you have more power although many of the basic techniques will be the same. I really want to make a Neo Geo game so have been messing around with Jeff Kurtz's dev tools. I took a long break but have just started looking at that again. All i have done so far is get multi-directional scrolling working so far. That was quite hard though (for me anyway)

I had a rethink and sort of scraped the terrorist theme , it only led to dark idea's like the high velocity pork round (HVPR) I will only offend people and yeah rather not so, I have started a new theme neo Tokyo style , but at least I can use a lot of colour now not just sand and mud . Have to tweak the main charecter sprites to fit that's what iam doing now, and I'll put them up.

I was looking into the neo recently myself but I haven't got the hardware I have a mvs but not the programming chips etc , what language do it use basic?

Yeah all up for that mate , I discovered a very simple engine called stencil it's not bad for prototyping uses code blocks so apparently it's easy I haven't had a good look yet but the sample charecter had a solid feeling , you should have a look.

I hope you figure out some of the neo development so you can teach me Secret

Sounded good! Grin I like the new theme though because it will be a lot different to Metal Slug and soldiers theme. Good luck with Stencil.

You do the coding and artwork on the PC and run it in MAME. You can send it to a Neo Geo via a lead but I haven't got the equipment to do that yet. The dev kit uses C and you can tweak the 68000 code too. There's a guy called HPMan who supplies most (if not all) of the routines you'll need in C so you don't have to code in 68000 if you don't want to.

I'm still learning but If you need any help just ask. The best thing to do is to edit "Neo Thunder" which is a basic schmup written with the kit. You can learn all the basics by playing around with that.

Sorry I didn't reply mate , had my pc and stuff packed up since March (house extension) couldn't afford to move out so confined to one room , office/game/junk room is floor to celing of stored boxes:( . Only have my iPad and I cannot work on that . Apparently only few weeks left and back to normality so to speak.

Not much buddy

I managed to get about 5 diffrent wave patterns working before I packed everything away (seems like all I done for past few years pack and unpack) basically at first boss stage , it's super simple stuff really but the challenge was to make it easy but still a challenge for my son, What I did was make my hit boxes smaller like some of the new shooters and radial damage so a hit in centre is instant deaf but hits to the side panels will just take off health. Also enemy speeds have been lowered but get 25% faster on a boss for that deadly feel.

But yeah celing being done today so may be able to unpack in few weeks Smile
