Retro Gamer Issue 151 - Top 25 Neo Geo Games
RiKo
Top 25 Neo Geo games as voted for by readers of Retro Gamer magazine. I'm not sure when this vote happened because I get this magazine every month and I totally missed it! Still it's hard to disagree with the final 25. I noticed they quoted Kernow who I'm fairly sure is a member at Neo-Geo.com. Since this is just out this month I won't scan it in but here's a camera pic of Games 10-5 in the list.

(It's a big photo so you can zoom in to read a little) but to clarify

10. The Last Blade
9. The Last Blade II
8. Pulstar
7. Metal Slug 3
6. KOF 98
5. Neo Turf Masters

I can't remember the last time I actually purchased a games magazine, but after seeing this post I popped into town and got this and the latest EDGE.

I thought it was a very solid Top 25, can't really disagree..... except with NAM. TSS deserved to be at 20 and I'd have squeezed PI2 in at 25 instead. Good to see the Last Blades getting some recognition and coming so close with 49/51%.

I'm actually quite interested in the first article about the Starforce Pi. Really cool looking and it'd probably become my go-to Metal Slug machine.

Thanks for pointing this one out Riko.
Sadly the magazine isn't sold here in The Netherlands, hopefully someone can post some high quality scans of the Neo pages.
Does anyone has the full top 25 list?

I'm not sure about the Starport Pi yet. I think it would be nice to have but usually that means it's something I don't need. I always worry about low quality screens on those kind of devices. Interested to see how it pans out though Thumbs Up

Actually very recently I have been swayed a bit towards Last Blade 2 but depending on how many people voted - my vote could have swung that closer or maybe even to a draw Wink

No problem Sensi Smile I don't actually have a scanner at the moment but I probably wouldn't scan it in anyway until the magazine was no longer on sale (a month or so). Just seems a bit unfair on them if it stops some people buying it. I can give you the list though.

25. Twinkle Star Sprites
24. Fatal Fury
23. Art Of Fighting 2
22. Shock Troopers : 2nd Squad
21. Last Resort
20. Nam-1975
19. King Of Fighters '02
18. Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy
17. Metal Slug X
16. Viewpoint
15. Neo Drift Out
14. Sengoku 3
13. Blazing Star
12. Puzzle Bobble 2
11. Shock Troopers
10. The Last Blade
9. The Last Blade II
8. Pulstar
7. Metal Slug 3
6. KOF 98
5. Neo Turf Masters
4. Windjammers
3. Samurai Shodown II
2. Garou: Mark of The Wolves
1. Metal Slug

They gave vote percentages for the Metal Slug series and *NO ONE* at all voted for Metal Slug 5. And Metal Slug 2 (6%) was right down there with MS4 (3%)

Like I said you can't argue with much of it and kudos for Viewpoint being in there. But Fatal Fury?? (surely Special at least or Real Bout Special). Also Blazing Star should be top 3. Surprised Sengoku 3 made it in too. It's not a bad game but didn't think it was so popular! and no Breakers/Breakers Revenge (although I can understand why)

There was a Neo Geo article in this (Issue 146). Although I didn't really like it that much, It was the standard kind of Neo Geo article going on about the large number of sprites and huge cost of the system. It was ok though. I think the problem was more that I have heard all this before in previous Neo Geo articles. So nothing new really. Plus there were a few errors in it.

From memory. I think they have done better ones in the past. (I scanned them in a while back for the magazine page section on here)

The guy who wrote the MVS article really hates Metal Slug 3. Made me think of Stuart Campbell. Smile

I can scan the article but not until the next issue is out at least.

Thanks Riko for the links and publishing the list. It's always nice to read some backgroundstories and dwell into the past of the Neo Geo. I really appreciate your time and effort making these scans available.

Windjammers is high on the list, a surprise for me. Never played it though, but regarded higher then popular franchises and system favourites makes it a dark horse for me. Neo Drift Out is also a game I wouldn't expect so high.
In a couple of months I will start playing NAM, offcourse end it with a review.
Nice to see that one at #20.

No problem. Although back then was sooo slow to scan pages in, used to take ages. Merlin I think scanned a load of issuse of Neo Geo Freak magazine in and put me to shame with the number of pages in that though!

Windjammers is on my list of games-still-to-get too. I've heard a lot of people say they really like it and tell stories of queues at the arcade machine back-in-the-day (playing winner stays on).

I really like NAM. Was at that time SNK experimented with lots of different playstyles (Cyberlip, Magician Lord, ASO II) It's kind of shame they got so focused on fighting games after that. Looking forward to your review Sensi and seeing what you think Thumbs Up One day I want to write a Blazing Star and a Cyber Lip review. ( I really know both those games well)

I wouldn't have given Windjammers that high of a position but it is a truly fantastic game, even if it looks simple.

I look forward to your reviews, I always enjoy reading other people's thoughts on games.
