Rockman: Battle & Fighters - Game of the Month
Murikov
Welcome to the Game of the Month!

Who is not familiar with Rockman, or better known as Mega Man here in the west? In the early 90's Capcom sold million of NES copies with that little blue robot posing on the cover. But not too many gamers may be aware that Capcom also developed a spin-off for SNK's Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Rockman: Battle & Fighters is rather a port of Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters (that were both released for the CPSII system before), making it rather an arena-based fighting game than a classic Mega Man installment.

Despite the fact that the game has no real versus mode and that it only was released in Japan under the 'Rockman' brand, it still regarded as a fine gem in the late Neo Geo Pocket library.

Rockman: Battle & Fighters

Genre: Fighting
Players: 2 (no versus, only database transfer)
Size: n/a
Released on: NGPC

Brief Description:

Rockman Battle & Fighters is a fighting game similar to the two arcade titles Mega Man: The Power Battle, and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters. Playing as one of four characters (Mega Man, Proto Man, Bass, and Duo), the player chooses between three sets of boss battles with various Robot Masters from the series. The battles are fought linearly in any order, and after each boss is defeated, a special weapon is added to the player's arsenal. Each boss is weak to one specific weapon, so the player is encouraged to strategize the order in which the bosses are faced. Two players can use a link cable to transfer database information between systems, but no co-op or versus play is supported.

High Score Challenge:

Unlike other fighting games on the NGPC, this one has a regular score system - so theoretically nothing would get in the way of carrying a High Score Challenge! If you guys are up for one, please contact Merlin or Priest for this!

who would have thought Capcom would develop for an SNK platform?

Anyways, I've never played this game. I've seen it in a game shop awhile ago. From the looks of it, its seems to be an NGPC version of Megaman: the power battle.

Well, it's certainly very different to the rest of the Pocket fighters, I'll give it that. It's been a while since I played it but I remember finding it quite enjoyable. I mean there's certainly nothing bad about it, it's just a bit quirky, which is part of the charm. All the characters look nice and it plays really well. And I suppose it is two games in one which is always a bonus. The only real major flaw is lack of two player system link.

I find it quite bonkers that, not only is this the only console port of these arcade games, but Capcom chose the Pocket of all things as the system to host it. I would have expected them to release the full arcade versions as late PSone or early DC games. Very, very strange choice.

EDIT: Ignore the previous paragraph, I've literally just discovered that the arcade games did indeed get a PS2 release in Japan. They were also included in the Anniversary Collection for Xbox, GC and PS2. :$

This is one of the last few Pocket games I'd like to get in nice complete condition, so unfortunately I had to resort to the FlashMasta to play it, me hearties.
