Why did NG have four buttons?
shion
Why four buttons if so few games used all of them. Most fall between the 2-3 range. Isn't four an unlucky number in China, as well as Japan?

Well, yeah, but I guess there are varying reasons, but if it wasn't a 4 button setup, we wouldn't have had the good selection of fighters and some other games on the NG that really uses the 4 buttons for it.

Agreed that many games really could have utilized more than the 2 buttons they used.

I would have liked 6 buttons - just in case Smile I think Stray makes best point that fighters required at least 4 buttons.

I don't know if 4 is unlucky or not but the SNES had four buttons. I doubt they minded as long as they didn;t call them I,II,III,IV. That might be why they went with letters instead.

EDIT : Duh! the SNES has 6 buttons but if you are counting the shoulder buttons then I guess the GBA has 4.

Maybe just 1 more than standard jamma just to be different with there controller pinout's?. i never really gave it much thought tbh maybe it was a cost thing aswell as you could press 2 buttons together to make a 3 button input via progamming the games that way

SNK obviously just wanted to be able to develop some games with a control scheme which would benefit from having more than three buttons. There are of course quite a few Neo Geo games which use all four buttons.

The question I would ask is why do some Neo Geo fighting games (Kabuki Klash, World Heroes Perfect, SS1, SS2) have six basic attacks (e.g. three punches, three kicks) when the Neo Geo is a four button system? That doesn't make sense to me. They were just copying Capcom when there was no need to. Really not necessary to have three strengths of kick in a weapon fighting game. Having to press two buttons together for a heavy attack is not ideal.

If you play Sam Sho as a 6 button fighter it totally changes the game.

Nice to see you drop by the forum Xian Xi.

I just prefer the one kick and three slashes in SS3/4 and don't like having to press two buttons for a heavy attack in the earlier games. If you were armed with a katana you probably wouldn't spend much time kicking the opponent anyway.
