Game of the Month #1 (GotW# 181) - Capcom VS SNK: Millenium Fight 2000
NeoStrayCat
Hey guys, yeah, I know its been a very long time, and NGFL isn't much the same as it used to be, but one things for sure, Game of the Week will be revived...again, and again, this time as Game of the Month. And if it does get some more traffic on these topics, then it may get revived back to weekly. For now...Lets look over SNK's first crossover gig (also, there was an update version CVS Pro, that adds both Dan and Joe from the original game's first ending).

Over all, CVS2 is a better game... only because of the bigger roster and the fact that you can decide what ratios you want. That being said, this versio, has certain areas where it outshines CVS2, IMO.

1) BGM - I absolutely HATE some of the music in CVS especially the England and USA stages. Horrible music. The music in CVS1 is way better.

2) Stage Backgrounds - The shitty 3D ones in CVS2 don't match the 2D sprites at all, they look fucking horrible. The stages in CVS1 ware pretty good, especially the bosses. I think they compliment the sprites better, and the intro to each stage are a nice touch.

3) I actually like the 4 button layout... it's really awesome to play a capcom fighter in the SNK spirit.

Just a matter of taste. I still play CVS on DC till this day. Sometimes those 3D backgrounds in CVS2 really piss me off.

On a side note, they should have made the rival Ryu V Terry, not Ryu V Kyo. Ryu and Terry are both legendary wandering warriors.

Well thanks for being faster on this one, Stray. I'm glad GOTW/GOTM is back. Wink

As for the game, it's a solid crossover title with a fine character roster - but honestly with horrible sound effects and especially ugly lightning FX.

Worthy of praise however are some of the stage backgrounds and the use of two differents grooves. Even the character artwork changes when selecting the Capcom or SNK groove.

This one is on my list of games to get. It looks fun. I have played it a bit back in the day and remember it being fun if a bit unbalanced.

You mean like this? lol! X3

Anyways, yeah CVS1 is good in some aspects, played it much on the DC, then to PS1, even if most PS1 fighters back in the days aren't as arcade perfect, but it works. But SVC: Chaos will be my go to crossover fighter just for kicks. (And yeah, CVS 2 makes it also better in some way, but SVC:Chaos will still be my good side of that series.)

And even though I haven't tried out the pocket version or even the cards games from that series, I may have to check those out sometime, if at all possible.

Also, if anyone has any ideas for any title to be the next GotM, ask away if necessary. Grin

The eccentric cat
This game.

This game.

Its what made me pay attention to KOF, and SNK in general. Capcom did a good job portraying the characters, and I remember thinking characters like Iori and Kyo were the most awesome characters in fighting game history. (of course that's not getting into the fact that I thought they were anime characters...)

It definitely hasn't aged well, though. I LOVE the music and visuals, it has a lot of heart put into it. I love the stage intros, and wish they would bring them back. The gameplay, however is... very wonky, broken, and slow. It was fun for what it was back in the day, but the gameplay aged horribly, I feel. Its a fun little diversion, but CvS2's gameplay definitely surpasses it in literally every way.
Without love, the truth cannot be seen.

I'm glad Game of the *month* is back. Good work Stray Thumbs Up

I can't contribute too much to this one I'm afraid. I'm not a big fan of cross-over fighting games. I usually just like to spend my time trying to master the original games. I did have this on the Dreamcast but I barely played it. It seemed ok though Smile

Good to see GOTW (GOTM) is back. Smile

I haven't actually played this one but like RiKo I'm not that keen on cross-over fighting games. I would rather play as those characters in their original games. Perhaps I'll give this a try one day though.

If anyone would like to take part in a high score challenge for this or any previous game of the week which doesn't already have a high score thread please contact either Priest or me. I help Priest with the high score challenges these days.

What I remeber at the time , is that this game polarised your friends they either pick capcom players or snk .. Since my mates have no interest in snk or even knew who they were they got a serious whooping to the point they never wanted to play me. I had one friend that took an interest and after some explanation he became a good challenge. Really good game nuff said.

On another note ....hit 100 posts after all these years

The Neo-Geo PC can connect to the Dreamcast version for versus points.

As EC mentioned, I believe the main problem here is being badly balanced. As in, if you’re not using a shoto, or know who to use against one, then good luck! I believe the general disappointment is: why do such a half-assed job on the balancing for a game that was literally a decade in the making? There was actually a ‘Pro’ version for the DC that attempted to fix the balance by taking out some cheap shoto moves. Overall, a decent, entertaining fighter. It’s fun to finally pit Ryu against Kyo or whatever. I am disappointed Capcom recycled sprites for its characters. The animation is noticeably limited even for the time, especially when compared to Guilty Gear.

I've played this last month at a gaming convention. Aside from the music, backgrounds, & redrawn SNK character sprites, it wasn't a very good game. The SNK characters have fewer moves & the roster on both sides wasn't very good. The Capcom side pretty much entirely consists of Street Fighter characters (mostly from SF2, the game only has 1 SFA character & 1 of the new challengers from SSF2) except for Morrigan from Darkstalkers while the SNK side mostly consist of characters that appeared in KOF except for Nakoruru & Raiden. I haven't played the Pro version yet so I don't really know what they changed in it.

Last, but not least, I find it weird that this game, along with a lot of the Capcom DC games, never got a PS2 port. Did they have an exclusivity agreement w/ Sega for these games?
